Ex owes me several hundred pounds

Was paying it back £10 a month but that's stopped. Pretty sure he'd forgotten he'd set it up so I'm lucky I got the money I did I reckon. But there's still quite a lot more outstanding.

This is money he borrowed and promised to pay back, not money I spent on him which was hundreds more (yes, stupid I know...)

So my question is, do I try to get the money back (I've sent two emails so far which have been ignored as expected) and HOW??? Or do I put it down to a bad experience and move on knowing I will never lend another lying, cheating bstrd man another penny?

If you have proof that you loaned him the amount of money, then you could use the paymentsalready made as evidence and sue him for the rest in small claims court . I think. I am not a lawyer.

Yep claim!

FetchezLaVache · 01/10/2013 22:27

Have you got any written confirmation of the loan, even something informal such as an email or a text? That, along with the payments already made as Revels said, would support your case.

I only have bank statements that show the transfers.

He always asked me for the money over the phone and I transferred it to him.

Any idea how much it would cost me to claim?? I'd love to take him to court over it but worry that the amount he owes would be less than my costs!

Small claims court is about £50 I think. Probably a limit on how much you can claim back through it but we got a house deposit of £650 back so might be worth trying

Oh, not half as much as I was expecting! He owes me about that, so definitely worth looking into! Thanks :)

Years ago my ex owed me £2, 000. I was reluctant to discuss it with him as I wanted to break contact. A friend gave me the best advice:

If someone offered you £2, 000 to pick up the phone and have that conversation, what would you do?

Of course I said I'd call. So I did and although it took a few months. He paid it all back. Before I called, I'd worked out a repayment schedule. It meant that a year later I could take an extra month of maternity leave.

Good luck.

Thanks Tizzy but unfortunately he has blocked my number. He's not a very nice man and I know speaking to him will never work.

Personally i would send him a letter setting out what he owes and also a proposed payment schedule. Inside include any print out of proofs you have of payment transfers to his account. Detail as much as possible and explain why there is x amount outstanding. Then say if he hasn't re-commenced payments by such and such date you will pursue him through the small claims court. On top of your original loan you will also be demanding your solicitor fees of x amount, plus interest on the original loan. Be very firm and official in the letter.

Good idea! I think I will do that first, and I'll send it recorded so he has to sign for it too.
