watch your cards at atms. mine was cloned yesterday and some charming individual has taken the rent and food money out of my account. The way these people work is to put a reader on the cashpoint and either a camera on the machine or a person behind you to watch you put your pin in.

THey dont care who they hit and they move fast once they have your details so i suggest either go into the bank or shield your pin while you put it in if you must use an atm. Trust me as i am a single parent and this was every penny i had to get to work and feed us. this does happen and it takes four weeks to get the money back if you can prove what they have done. Please please pay attention at cash points or better yet dont use them.

Thanks for the warning prettyfly - so sorry to hear this has happened to you. Sad

katierocket · 13/06/2006 18:57

Mine was cloned the other day too.

Kathlean · 13/06/2006 19:10

Christmas is a bad time for this as they like YOU to pay for their gifts.

My mate had this problem. )-:

fairyjay · 13/06/2006 19:12

How awful. I really hope those bastards get what they deserve. Sad

shhhh · 13/06/2006 20:34

sorry to hear that..such a shame that they feel it's their right to get money by other means...

I hope they get their comeuppence (sp..) and you get your money back...Sad

BTW you also need to be wary about where you use your card..some "dodgy" shops are taking copies of your card while you pay and selling on the details..thus allowing others access to your account.Shamefull. Never allow anyone to take your card out of your sight.

prettyfly1 · 13/06/2006 20:41

I know this might be a daft question but have you reported it to the police and your bank? If you have taken all possible steps to protect your card in some cases they will reimburse you from a certain point - ask your bank!

It goes without saying, cover the keypad when you enter your pin on an atm or chip and pin machine, never let your card out of your sight when paying for goods at a restaurant etc, never let anyone know your pin number or passwords for internet/phone banking (your bank will never ask you for these other than for genuine transactions - i.e. they ask you for the 1st, 5th and 6th numbers or whatever when you phone them) and be careful who you give out the security number on the back of the card to - it's part of a series of numbers on the signature strip of your card that verifies payments made not in person - if you get a phone call asking you to verify it do not give it out! The time it's needed is at the point of transaction or if they request the information in a more formal way so that you can phone them back on the number you know belongs to that company.

The bastards don't care who they hit, whether it be a single mother, grieving father or a nun; it's not their money at the end of the day. And prettyfly, I hope they rot in hell too! Angry

I read this thread as "I'd like to kill you all"

Sorry this has happened PF. Will the bank refund you?

tribpot · 13/06/2006 21:05

I certainly HOPE the bank will reimburse you, if not a call to the local paper / your MP should get some response.

In the meantime, is there anything either your work or the child benefit people can do to advance you some money?

Vev · 15/06/2006 13:02

Watch out for anyone with a mobile phone nearby when using ATMs - apparently they can get your card info using bluetooth.

docket · 15/06/2006 13:08

hope this all gets resolved asap prettyfly, complete bloody violation.

miniminx · 15/06/2006 15:59

This happened to me several years ago - £800 swiped from our account whilst we were on holiday abroad!

But the bank have to reimburse you for all of this - you were using their system without doing anything wrong. You didn't lose your card or even get it stolen, so the deal is that so that people don't lose faith in the banks, the banks are liable.

Our bank just got us to go through our bank statements identifying any payments that weren't made by us - they were pretty easy to spot, mainly because the person who had our clone lived 100s of miles away and shopped in alien sounding places like Budgens and ate at a restaurant we'd never heard of. Anyway, they refunded us fully and we didn't even spot the cloning had happened - the police rang us to say they had apprehended someone with a clone of one of our cards and told us to ring our bank.

So don't worry, just get on it.
