Can anyone recommend a website for companionship/friendship for an older man?

Hello,
My grandfather-in-law is widowed and deeply lonely. He really just wants to meet some ladies his age for friendship and companionship. Anyone know of any 'nice' sites that I could have a look at on his behalf - he isn't very internet savvy Sad
Thanks in advance

I think he'll be snapped up!

I wouldn't use the internet though. Can you look at his local area and see what's on offer in terms of dancing or bingo or other social events?

ImperialBlether · 08/08/2013 21:39

How old is he?

Sleepyhoglet · 08/08/2013 21:41

I would advice joining U3A type groups. How old is he? My grandmother met a lovely man through these groups in real life. I am not sure online dating works as well for the over 70 s as they are likely to be fewer people on them due to being less Internet savvy.

What about classic fm or saga. What about a group holiday? Tour thing ?

ImperialBlether · 08/08/2013 21:47

The thing is there are far fewer men than women of his age, so he should find it relatively easy to make new friends. Poor guy, I'm glad he's asked you for help.

Yeah, saga probably have some dating/ companion thing.

Guardian Soulmates is possibly worth a look.

My dad met his partner on a site called, I think, plenty more silver fish - definitely something about silver fish. He was 70 at the time - he's still with the lovely lady now, some seven years later. He was a widower and reasonably internet savvy (does internet banking etc).

Obviously there's some luck involved, but they have had a real success - they travel together a lot and have a lot in common.

So it is possible to meet someone on the internet, whatever your age. (For full disclosure, I also met my partner online four years ago - on the dreaded plenty of fish).

Saga has its own dating site.

There is also a site set up by someone for his mum - can't remember the name of it but google dating for over 50 s ( or 60s) and loads should come up.

But agree that if he is mobile and fit, he should get out more and join clubs etc.

If he's of the Guardian-reading type then Guardian Soulmates is well worth a try, but it is quite romantically focussed - maybe start with something that's more to do with shared interests or hobbies - cooking classes perhaps? I know some men become demons of the annual WI cake competitions.

You could check out meetup.com - they have all sorts of meetup groups. No idea if you'd find anything that would work for him but it's worth a look I'd say.

U3A - University of the Third Age would be a good bet. If there is a active one where he lives they have groups and activities to suit all interests.

Churches often have drop-in/meet up groups, lunch groups, speaker groups etc if he fancied that. He will instantly be put in charge of the finances/working the projector as apparently only men can do those things!

Some areas have tea dances - the leisure trust in our area runs them and so does one of the concert halls and also the adult ed college. It doesn't matter if he has two left feet, he'll be snapped up!

Maybe an evening class? There are always more women at those. Cooking maybe? Creative writing?

Choirs are good if he can sing at all. Or even if he can't, as long as he doesn't pick a terribly serious choral society.

He could go into schools and read with the kids. I met an elderly guy once who loved doing that. It gave him material for his creative writing! Lots of nice ladies in schools and the other volunteers etc.

If he is fit enough he could volunteer with WRVS (they take men too but most of the volunteers are female). Helping someone else out is often really nice when you are lonely. He could do home library service, help people fix things in their houses or just chat. They also run hospital shops, cafes and trollies.
