Iphones are wonderful things ...

Thanks to another mumsnetter I have been introduced to an excellent app which can be used to find ... errr ... 'lost' iphones and their owners (should they be lost too).

All you need is the password to the apple-id the phone is running from, then turn on "find my iphone" in the icloud settings and next time you need to know the wherabouts of that phone you can log in to icloud on any laptop and locate the phone. It brings it up on a little map and doesn't notify the phone that it has been searched for.

Just saying.

Next best thing to micro-chipping iPhone's owner, eh? Wink

Tis very handy. Me and dh use it loads if we are trying to rendezvous. But, yes, in the wrong hands it could cause a whole lot of trouble!

MrsZoidberg · 24/06/2013 17:23

Does anyone know of an equivalent Android one - for say, working out where a teenager is as opposed to where they say they are!

forumdonkey · 24/06/2013 18:15

I use lookout for my Android. To be honest I've never actually used it because I've never lost my phone but works in the same way, in that you can log onto a pc/laptop and it will locate it. It will also take a photo of anyone who has tried to use your password and got it wrong (without them knowing) & email it to you. This has been done to me - the most unflattering pictures of myselfSad Grin

Hmmm how handy!

ImperialBlether · 24/06/2013 18:36

But you need the password - if you had that, most problems to do with infidelity would be solved!

VBisme · 24/06/2013 18:38

DH and I use it all the time to track each other (for totally innocent purposes), I'd never thought to use it to find out what the kids are up to! Grin

ImperialBlether · 24/06/2013 18:38

Just be warned about this facility though if you don't regularly back up your data. My son was showing me this and then we realised he wouldn't want me tracking him so selected something like "remove iphone" (on my iphone) and it deleted all of the data on his - everything - music, messages, numbers etc. Turns out he had cloud storage set up when he bought it but there were a horrible few hours when he thought all was lost.

ImperialBlether · 24/06/2013 18:39

Oh and there was no prompt asking whether he was sure. It seems to be for if your phone has been stolen, so that nobody can access your data.

ecclesvet · 24/06/2013 19:15

MrsZoidberg Cerberus can do that, but the user would see that there was a new app installed. If you can make them keep it on there you could track it I suppose.

It is so handy.

My dh did London-Brighton cycle last week and we could track him the entire way and see how much longer we had to wait at the finish line.

And what have you discovered eh SisterTax?

Anything interesting?
