Anyone in/around London - go to the new Edmonton flagship store. Much much nicer than Thurrock and doesn't get half as busy. Even fairly reasonable on a Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks ago!

There was a riot there on opening day - maybe that is what has put people off going there!! Oh well - it's good news for us anyway as it's only 10 minutes drive. Nice restaurant and separate cafe too (nice comfy chairs for breastfeeding mums).

SHHHH · 29/05/2006 15:01

DH & I last went together when we were dp's about 4 years ago....after entering the store, we left after 5 mins after having the biggest row ever..!! BTW it took us 30 mins to find the exit Wink.!!!!

No I go with my mum..much easier, similar opinions and no arguments..!!!!

Gingerbear · 29/05/2006 15:10

The best time to visit Ikea is 9am on a Wednesday morning, alone, wearing dark glasses.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 29/05/2006 20:32

Yes Hunker, but how did i know you'd already be here Wink

DP reckons that IKEA get payments from divorce lawyers. We always spot someone having a complete hissy fit...

foxinsocks · 29/05/2006 20:35

lol lahdeedah, think the riot put a few people off!

the last 2 times we've been to the Croydon one, there's been a police presence and the last time, someone was carted off (for shoplifting presumably)

JackieNo · 29/05/2006 20:43

Our last trip to Ikea was to the Milton Keynes one on what we didn't realise was cup final day - it was really quite quiet (for Ikea). Worked well. So pick a really big sporting occasion, and go then, would be my tipSmile.

Arabica · 29/05/2006 21:17

Edmonton Ikea rocks (although wouldn't risk it with DS or on a bank holiday in case they have another riot). The only thing I don't like is the piped music in the car park. That always makes me feel suicidal.

Feistybird · 29/05/2006 21:19

They're buidling a new one in Coventry. The 1960's crappy ringroad can't even cope with the delicate trickle of traffic into the crappy precinct so I predict chaos - and rows that start before setting a foot in the shop...

tillykins · 29/05/2006 21:30

PMSL at "But its a pound" that is so me!!

When I was pg, we had a major sort out and bought loads of shelving, book cases etc from Ikea and had it delivered

The delivery men actually commented we would have had a huge row before it was assembled - but they were wrong, cos as I was pregnant, DH didn't dare even speak to me sharply for fear of my reaction Wink

Feistybird · 30/05/2006 10:21

You see, we can't keep away, we know its faults -the bloody yellow brick road - the shortcuts that take you back to where you started, the £1 gadgets that're irresistable, those huge yellow bags that gape everywhere, the expansive carparks that are big, but somehow never big enough and the silly bloody names they give the stock.

But none of us can resist worshipping at the Temple of Ikea.

And Cod, you need a Billy bookcase for your ds.

We have to go soon - need a bunch of Malm and a large birch Billy. Have managed to avoid it for several years - will it be the end for us? Shock

Last time we went, half way round DD1 decides she needs the toilet. It was hours before we met DP and DD1 again...

YellowFeathers · 30/05/2006 10:28

Dh and I have an understanding about Ikea.

He doesn't go and I do. Simple.
Went with SIL last week and that worked fine Grin

Ahh. Ikea. Do I win by having ikea'd in the UK, Holland, Germany & Australia? We just move country and kit out a house with exactly the same stuff.

There was a 45 minute queue for smaland in the big Sydney one a couple of weeks ago. Cue distraught DD being dragged around the store instead of playing in the bounce bounce that we'd hyped up for the whole drive. And yes, we had a massive row too Angry. And we didn't buy anything.

Most stupid ikea moment: Going on my own to the Croydon one on Boxing Day. I still have the scars. Women were snatching things out of my trolley! It was survival of the fittest, and I wasn't.

Best Ikea moment: buying a chaise longue when we lived on a houseboat in Amsterdam and having to balance it precariously through the waterside windows to get it in (hatch too small). Cue huge mirth from pissed boat-riding Dutchmen.

YellowFeathers · 30/05/2006 12:54

lol!
I didn't realise trolley snatching actually went on Shock

Big wow to you living on a houseboat though. That must have been brilliant!

arfishymeau · 30/05/2006 13:14

It was like something out of the birds.

Yes, houseboat was great fun. Gave it all up when pg. I would love to do it again but DD is the accidental type.

SparklyGothKat · 30/05/2006 13:23

I went last week with Misdee, for the first time ever, I loved it, all that stuff for the new house, was in heaven. I brought a new computer desk, a coffee table and some bits and pieces. It was peeing it down that day so was very busy. Would like to go during the week next time. My parents decided to have something to eat before we started, and all I wanted to do was SHOP!!! Grin

Em32 · 30/05/2006 13:26

I have to say I like it - great place to get a rest from feeding the children at home. Ds loves the meatballs and dd can have her own food microwaved instead of a jar. And....they have a breastfeeding area (even if it is the size of a pea).
However, the one way system and the queues at the end are evil.....

vkone · 30/05/2006 13:43

I took my mum (an Ikea virgin) when DS was 9mths and she still goes pale when the word Ikea is mentioned.

Her last word on the subject was "if you don't buy that chair, I'm never talking to you again"
