What is usual "response" after divorce papers sent?

Solicitor says he will sent my DH a letter informing him of my intent to divorce. He says that the ball is then in DHs court and "we await his response".
What does that mean exactly?
So much information coming at me from solicitor I didn't take everything in.

solicitors always ahve to send letter of intent before goigngto court/finalising.
if he replies you knwo if he contesting etc.
if he doesnt reply you jsut go to court as he not contesting to get it signed off.

but of course he might not reply now but still turn up at court contesting.
will there be debate over finance/children etc?

I think he will be difficult over money. He is self employed so can make his income look bad if needs be.
As for the DCs, I think he will be really stubborn as he sees his weekends as free time to play golf and stuff and has stated in the past that he will not be a "weekend dad" as he calls it.

Mine didn't send a letter of intent. The first communication from my sol to my Ex was the actual divorce petition.

No letter of intent here...just divorce papers in the post to him. After that it can go many ways...depends on your DH....debt get too worried RN...his proclamations of future parenting plans could all be bluster. IIWY any direct communication you have with him should be in emails so you have a paper trail in case you need it.

Would love to keep contact down to emails only, but we are still living in the same house so might be a bit difficult.

We divorced while under same roof, and then did financial settlement while under same roof. Kept most of our communication re the settlement to either sol's letters, court forms, and email.

I did have a few conversations with him about money, sort of by accident, but managed to keep my cards to myself, rather than angrily revealing my thoughts. He, on the other hand, did reveal some of his thinking, which was useful. Should you find yourself in such a conversation, try saying "I'll have to think about that" to anything he proposes, and say that you think it is best to deal with these matters through solicitors.

The only other communication we had was confined to the exchange of necessary information about day to day life.

Yep my solicitor sent a letter of intent. Basically it outlined the grounds of unreasonable behaviour so that we could tweak the wording if he didn't like it. Is yours unreasonable behaviour?

They Will probably have put a deadline in the letter, and then you can file the petition at court anyway.

My H wrote 'not at this address, no further correspondence Will be accepted' and put it in the post box. I then confirmed it was his hand writing, and that we both still lived at that address. Bizarre.

Very difficult living in the same house - do you have plans for one of you to move out?

Oh he will definitely stay here as he sees this as his house......we are the lodgers!
Hope he is not going to be difficult but think he will be when ot pops through letter box.
