Do you ever have an evening like something in a movie?

I was in Rome this weekend. I was walking along, in the early evening, minding my own business, looking at a map, and a tall, handsome frenchman asks me if I'm lost. We start a conversation, we go for a coffee, he invites me for dinner, and we have a lovely conversation, from art to psychology to literature, and at times I laugh so much, it's hurting. He walks me home, and kisses me on the cheek, and that's the end.

I know I'll never see him again, but it just felt so unreal, and lucky to have had such a pure, almost fantastic night. Seeing him again would only be a disappointment.

This sounds like I'm a journalist (I'm not), but I wonder if this has happened to others. I'm genuinely flabbergasted.

Oh, I don't feel I can say, sorry! His name probably won't ring any bells, anyway, although he has presented a couple of documentaries and he regularly composes music for films. We lost touch because I kind of fell for him and he told me that he was having an affair with a married woman. A few years later, I saw that he'd written an article in a newspaper about drug abuse...and found out that his son had died of an O.D since we'd lost touch Sad

RH Sounds like a fabulous memory to cherish. Maybe be a Rules Girl & wait for him to contact you. Also be prepared for likelihood of married/partnered up. I think the French are very good at what you described. A very good friend of mine had a similar encounter in Paris.
I have my own "movie moment" involving a brief affair with an Alaskan bush pilot, who I never contacted after as he was married, but the whole thing was cinematic & poignant.

Ah that sounds so romantic! You really need to get in touch with him!

I've had two 'movie days'. The first was two Christmas Eve's ago, DP and I had flown to Austria for a snowboarding/Christmas holiday. We decided to go and explre the town, as we were walking (it was the evening), it started lightly snowing. Then we arrived at the town square and there was a huge Christmas tree all lit up, surround by local people with a brass band and a choir singing. People were slow dancing and we joined in, after an hour we went for a meal and had champagne. It was beautiful.

My second day was my graduation. I had my makeup done with my mum in the morning, then we went and had an amazing ceremony were I collected my degree and met Proffessor Winston (and I didn't trip!) afterwards it was sunset, I met my DP and parents on the top of the steps of the town hall, surrounded by lit up fountains and about 2,000 people from graduation - then DP got down on one knee and proposed to me! I said yes, everyone clapped around us. Then we got back to my parents house and they'd arranged a big surprise party for me - all my family were there and we had a great celebration! Honestly the best two days of my life, they both didn't feel real they were so amazingly perfect.

Is your name Linda? He could be your fabrice or Charles -Eduoard:)

How lovely - you must tell him you had a wonderful time. And accept him as a friend on fb- don't play any rules games!

Why would it be disappointing to meet again? Hes not suddenly going to shrink/ gain 20 stone and stop being charming! Worse to never bother and not find out, surely? Is he French? Could you meet in Paris and keep up the dates in romantic locations?:)

I have had some movie moments which I may come back and spill later, although some are rather more Bridget jones than Hollywood..

I trust you've checked his relationship status and photos for signs of a partner?

I was in a long distance relationship when I returned home from working abroad. I was thrilled after a few months when he booked a flight to visit me here & went to meet him at Gatwick. As soon as he came through the doors and found me in the queue he got down on one knee and proposed right in the middle of the arrivals hall! Everyone around us clapped and, despite being embarrassed at creating a scene, it really did feel like a movie Smile

Love the sound of your Frenchman OP

I had a very similar situation.

I was 18, competing in a uni competition in chicago. I'd never been before and so I got there a few days early to explore. I ran into another student who had the same idea...we bumped into each other (i spilled coffee on him) we took a walk, hung out, ate lunch, dinner, breakfast and lunch again. He asked me to marry him within 2 hours of meeting...

we even competed against each other at the competition. We married 4 years later and have now been together 10 years.

No one ever believes this is how we met. I don't care though--I don't think I could be happier with anyone else.

What a perfect evening OP, I'm quite jealous!

The closest I can come is arranging to meet a young man at a train station, in the days before mobiles. We had met on holiday and swapped numbers, and he was visiting Glasgow and so we arranged a date. I waited for an hour at the station before accepting I'd been stood up, so took myself off shopping to cheer myself up. When I got back to the train station after a 3 hour mooch around town and was heading to the underground to go home, something made me go back into the direction of the main concourse and there he was! He scooped me up in front of everyone when he saw me. He had missed his train into town and had no way of getting in touch so had decided to wait at the station in case I came back. It was now 4 hours after our arranged meeting time! He must have really wanted to see me! We had dinner together then had to get our last trains home..

We had a short happy affair, but he was in the Royal Marines and our lives took different courses. He died last year from cancer and remembering this funny night we had has brought back some happy memories and happy tears. Smile

Had one last week. Gorgeous and famous person flew in to speak at an event that is sponsored by my employers. He wanted to go out for a drink afterwards with some of the other people there, I got to give him a ride and took him back to the hotel afterwards.
He invited me in for a cup of tea (it was v late so bar was closed). He made me some awful tea, we talked, we kissed. I went home and he flew out at dawn.
I haven't stopped thinking about him since.
I wish I were as sensible as you OP and could just enjoy the memory and not wish and hope for more.

I remember when the man I'd stalked admired and adored from afar for years finally kissed me. It was utter magic.

He's just fallen asleep upstairs now after putting DS to bed. :)

OP, have you seen 'Before Sunset' & or its sequel? There's also a third instament 'Before Midnight' coming out soon. These films will tell you everything you need to know about romantic evenings wandering round european cities with a complete stranger...and also what happens if & when you meet again, disturbing that perfect memory. My favourite films ever.

Sort of...
I met a guy on a night out, he was with his friend, I with mine. Both if them had partners but we had such a great laugh til the early hours. He was from another town and this too is befire mobiles. On New Years eve he fonvince his friends to go out in my town to see if he could see me and we dud bump into each other! After a drunken snog we arranged to meet so I could help him buy his little brother hus xmas present. (6th if January present day in Spain). So we met for the afternoon, we had so much fun shopping that he wanted to meet at night again, the present was a Titanic model in a box and he was on a scooter. I still remember the lovely feeling when he rode off, and roda back 2 hours later to meet me. That evening we sat at the quay just talking and laughing. It was just great.
I think I saw him every day fir the next two years! We did split up but I went to his wedding and we are still friends Smile
