Where to go that won't be a Mother's Day haunt?!?

Help! Going on a lunch date on Sunday. DD will be with my XH and Mother's Day's been a bit "meh" for me since I lost my mum two years ago. So don't particularly want to go anywhere where there'll be lots of mums being treated. I know, makes me sound like a bitter cow, but I just don't want reminders that I'm not celebrating with my mum that might lead me to being tearful - on what is technically a first "date"!

Any suggestions for places to go in the East/Central London area greatly appreciated!

Wherever you go is going to be likely to have something to mark the day. Unless you went to McDonalds or similar.. Could you rearrange the lunch date into a walk or a trip to a sunday market or something perhaps?

Hmmmm, MacDonalds .....! Think you could be right there. Think date may have to be rearranged to a less family-oriented day! Hmm

A stroll round Petticoat Lane, a drink in one of the pubs, followed by curry in/around Brick Lane - avoid the obvious tourist traps by discounting those that have Time Out reviews in the window choosing a restaurant frequented by mainly Asian diners who are unlikely to be celebrating Mother's Day.

Alternatively, browsing the many treasures to be seen at the British Museum followed by a late lunch in Soho's Chinatown - again, peer through the windows until you find a venue that has a majority of Chinese diners as they'll be recovering from their New Year celebrations Smile

Once 3.30-4pm rolls round, the MDay lunch celebrants will have dispersed and it should be safe to eat anywhere except MaccyDs - but, in the meantime, stick to areas where non-CofE/RC cultures are predominant.

If you're into burgers I'd be reasonably confident that the Hard Rock Cafe on Piccadilly doesn't get an overload of MDay clients and, happily, London isn't overrun with tourists at this time of year.

Nandos?

Chinese place in Chinatown or Bayswater?

A museum restaurant/cafe might be ok. Hayward Gallery?

Or how about a brunch date?
