Drink Driving

Will cut straight to the point. Is there a police phone line I can ring to get an officer to catch someone actually DD'ing? As opposed to turning up sometime after the act, ie when home and can deny driving home from the pub?

What number to call depends very much on how immediate the situation is. If the driver has just dug his car keys out of his pocket and is staggering out of the pub towards his car, then 999 is absolutely the right number to call - with as much info about the car, direction of travel etc, as possible. If he gets drunk every Saturday at the same pub and drives home, then 101 or Crimestoppers is the way forward.

Good luck OP. You are doing a good thing regardless of your motives.

Sad scurry it is shit isnt it, whats worse is that people still think its fine to do it and i dont get why?

my last night shift ended up with a van in a tree. pissed up driver and 2 pissed up passengers. all walked away, but they could so easily have killed someone.

scurryfunge · 22/11/2012 00:25

Vicar, I don't get it either. I shall remain squawky and proud.

Besides, in order to make sense of the '23% of car accidents involve a drunk driver' statistic, we need to know what % of car journeys involve a drunk driver - I would respectfully guess less than 1% (let's say half of a percent) & we can then see that a drunk driver is 46 times more likely than a sober one, to be involved in an accident. For example.

Actually, if mundanes were less obsessed with cars and dependent on them, the world would be a better, safer place. Yes, of course, some people live in the middle of nowhere and/or have mobility issues and/or have family members with mobility issues and/or need to transport a lot of heavy, bulky stuff around with them.

But an awful lot of people are just unthinkingly dependent on their cars, despite living in urban areas with plentiful public transport and having perfectly functional feet and legs. And getting the screaming shits over drink driving is a kind of superstitious ritual that they think will protect them against having an accident.

I recently found out one of my work colleagues regularly drinks & drives. Turned out it's common knowledge however no one has ever bothered to report it. No one had the guts to do it and 'didn't want to get involved'. I managed to find out this person's home address so the next time he staggers back into work after lunchtime drinking with clients I'm going to report him.

differentnameforthis · 22/11/2012 03:55

Well this mundane is quite possibly dependant on her car & tbh, I see nothing wrong in that. I live in Australia where cycling & walking aren't always possible (due to extreme heat).

I don't see your logic, SGB that drink driving isn't the worse thing in the world. You are usually so sensible & when I see your name, I know I can't often count on you for sensible advice/opinions. Not this time, hey!

What will protect a lot of people is getting the screaming shits over drink driving. Roads aren't unsafe because of there being too many cars on them, they are unsafe because people can't drive those car properly, or are under the influence of drink/drugs. The roads are as safe as the people on them.

Vicar, scurry.., yours is a job I would have no desire to do. I am sorry you see the things you do. Keep up the hard work.

differentnameforthis · 22/11/2012 03:56

I know I can often count on you

NoraGainesborough · 22/11/2012 06:29

solid is there a reason you are being so rude. When you loved one has been killed by a drunk driver, then come back and have a proper conversation.
This isn't about peoples use of cars instead of public transport. Its about people putting other peoples lives at risk.

Calling people 'hard of thinking' and 'mundanes' makes you sound like a bit of a twat. Your stats don't even make sense. Almost a quarter involve drink driving? That's a MASSIVE amount.

HecatePropylaea · 22/11/2012 06:36

I think preventing 23% of car accidents would be a wonderful thing.

do you happen to have the statistics for people killed or injured per year by drink driving?

cos whatever it is - I'd love to see that percentage gone too. Even if it's only 1%

1% of people alive who wouldn't have been is still worth it...
