My husband has forgotten my birthday. Am I over reacting?

I feel so sad Sad
It is my birthday today. Not a 'big' birthday but still my birthday.

Usually I am very excited re: my birthday. This year DH was working away for last few days so haven't banged on about it like I usually would. But woke up this am expecting at least a card, little pressies and some treats...

I wouldn't have minded if DH had been mortified and apologetic for forgetting, but instead his attitude was 'birthdays don't matter as you get older'. I know that this is his opinion but I've always done the card/cake/small gift thing for him.

He's making me feel materialistic but it's really not about the money. We never spend more than a few pounds on each other anyway. A card and breakfast in bed and a homemade card from DD (she's only 1 so can't do anything on her own) was all I wanted.

Just feel so let down and disappointed.

Am I behaving like a spoilt brat?

If you pm me / anyone else with your address we could deluge you with birthday cards. That would show him - he doesn't care but a bunch of strangers want to see you happy. Seriously, pm me!

Roseformeplease · 24/07/2012 22:50

If wanting to send a card to brighten up someone's day (and piss off their OH) makes me crazy, ekidna, then I am out and proud and madder than a sack of badgers.

GrendelsMum · 24/07/2012 22:51

So I shouldn't have forgotten my DH's birthday then?

ekidna · 24/07/2012 22:52

Way sorry rose will send sorry card! Nah think its lovely xx

DorothyGherkins · 24/07/2012 22:54

Most men dont really do birthdays in my experience, not their own, or anybody elses. I cant understand how husbands can 'forget' a birthday, I mean its a regular occurrence isnt it? And everyone uses mobile phones and computers these days, so its so easy to set up a reminder. Take yourself off to a nice friendly eatery in the next few days with your little one, and treat yourself to a nice meal, or coffee or cake! At least you have all the good wishes of MNetters Moo, Many Happy Returns.

Leanderbaer · 24/07/2012 23:03

I dont think it terrible, especially if he has been busy with work. I have occasionally not got anything for my birthday from my DH but only when he has been travelling for work. I haven't minded as he is usually very generous and considerate and occasionally he gets me really nice presents for no reason at all.

I would prefer to get something for every birthday.
If he does this in future make sure you get DD to 'buy' you something you really want.

Leanderbaer · 24/07/2012 23:03

Ps Happy Birthday!
Thanks Wine

CuriousMama · 24/07/2012 23:06

Leanderbaer he shouldn't make op feel materialistic though.

Leanderbaer · 24/07/2012 23:11

curiousmama. You are right, he shouldn't, and if OP likes her birthday to be celebrated he should make an effort.

amillionyears · 25/07/2012 06:54

I always have to remind my DH about mine, and hope he remembers on the actual day.Unfortunately,my sons are pretty much the same, and my daughters get confused about the date.
Seems DH has managed to pass it down in his DNA grrrrr
They cant remember other relatives dates either,so its not personal to me.

exoticfruits · 25/07/2012 07:12

Happy birthday for yesterday - of course birthdays matter when you are older. I think that you just have to take the lead - make his special and get the DCs excited about other people's birthdays, surprises, wrapping presents etc. in advance of yours start saying 'what shall we do for my birthday? Would you like a birthday list?

Aquelven · 25/07/2012 07:47

Happy Birthday for yesterday.

Have a lovely lunch out today with your Dc & friends. And buy yourself a present on the way home, something you really want. Tell him it's the gift he forgot to buy you if he comments.

bleedingheart · 25/07/2012 08:14

The ONLY way he should've reacted to this is to apologise, to turn it onto Moo is out of order.
I cannot abide the attitude that birthdays don't matter when you're older, you have maybe 60-100 birthdays in your lifetime (hopefully) and that represents a tiny percentage of the time you are alive. Why shouldn't someone make a fuss of you if you want one? We get one life, some people are taken too soon, show them you remember them and you're glad they were born.
