Depends on how much they are earning, and what their outgoings to work are. £50 a week is not unrealistic at all. If you want to do them a favour, find out how much a room in a shared house is locally, and work up to charging that plus a share of the food bill.
Food and washing only included if they do their bit, but nothing else.

Not quite there yet but I'd have thought the £250/month that the 'Rent a Room' scheme allows isn't a bad benchmark. That's the price you'd get if you leased their room out to someone else and it's probably what they'd pay if they went for a house-share. High enough to encourage them to get some paid employment, not so high as to be profiteering.

An amount that's somewhere between being small enough so they can still save up to move out but large enough to make them realise that it's worth getting their own place.

My Mum always charged 1/3 of take home pay as she thought that would start getting us ready to realise we wouldn't get all of our pay once we moved out.

Very helpful ... thank you all very much.... Thanks

Cheese my mum charged 25% of take home pay!

Once it reached the going rate for renting a room it became a flat cost.

It was a good deal because we weren't just renting a room, we were in 'digs' - meals etc provided - but unlike a lodger my folks were able to allocaate us housework (i.e. doing all the laundry not just our own, mowing the lawn)
