You'd be better posting this in Chat or Style and Beauty.

If this were me I would say: 24 hours' babysitting i.e. take the kids off my hands at 5pm and return them to me at 5pm the next day.

I'm 40 in a few weeks' time and I would LOVE this!!

By 40 most people have plenty of 'stuff' so how about a fabby experience of some kind? Theatre/concert tickets or a special interest event like a Literary Festival if she's a bookworm or a day at the Chelsea Flower Show if she's a gardener - bigger budget. A girlie day at the local beauty parlour (with their bezzie mate of course) getting face and nails done if it's a smaller budget.

Budget?

passivehoovering · 03/05/2012 17:54

ohhhhhhhhh

A voucher for one of the Lush Spas, or any spa really. AND to babysit when I am Spa-ing.

Afternoon tea with the friend somewhere fab, like Libertys or anywhere that does tea and cake and you can dress up for.

My friend was recently 40 and so was her husband. We got together with another couple and got them a £100 voucher for a really nice restaurant. They dont have much money and never go out- I think they were pleased.
We are also 40 this year and they got me and DH a catered meal (by a friend of theirs) to share with them and another couple. I was thrilled and cant wait for a chef to cook for me at home!

CMOTDibbler · 03/05/2012 20:56

Overnight babysitting would be amazing, and the nicest thing I could ask for tbh. But then we don't have any family babysitters- for some people I know it wouldn't be exciting at all

For my 40th a friend arranged for afternoon tea and shopping in a nearby historical city so lots of fab shops and tearooms and she had also spoken to my mum who knew about it and babysat my dc without any pressure to come home until we were ready, it was lovely and so thoughtful.

susiedaisy · 03/05/2012 21:02

Just to add she also picked me up and drove so I didn't even have to faff about with parking etc!

When I was 40, definitely a "voucher" for babysitting, or to meet up and take me out for lunch or something.
Anything that involved me having alittle bit of "me time", and not a 'thing' to clutter up the overcrowded house even more.
