This is a quote from another thread (i didnt want to hijack the thread so started this one)

For a split second i though - WTF has football got to do with women's aid, why would they be busy because of football. But then i remembered reading/hearing/watching something that said that incidents of DV increase during important football championships

Than i think, REALLY??? Are men who abuse their women THAT cuntish and feeble that they allow their emotions over a game to spill over into giving their wife a back hander??

Then i think, yes, thats probably true
Then i feel sad
Then i feel angry

That is all

Boring, I was enlightened to the same thing this week just before the Manchester Derby when it was reported on the radio that police expected more incidences of DV due to the footy. It had never occurred to me before and I was appalled and totally shocked.

Olympia2012 · 02/05/2012 23:45

A championship.... Like the World cup...... Not bleeding man u!!!

squeakytoy · 02/05/2012 23:50

Yes, it is true. Simply because when there is a football game on tv in the pub, there are going to be more blokes going down to the pub to watch the match. They will be drinking.

The men who go home and abuse their partners are going to be abusive tossers anyway, but a big game on tv, which attracts more viewers means that more abusers than usual will be pissed, therefore more incidents than usual will occur.

As I said on the other thread... football is not the one to blame. Alcohol is the trigger.

Olympia2012 · 02/05/2012 23:52

Absolutely! Alcohol...

CrispyCod · 02/05/2012 23:59

After being in a local pub last year the evening of a derby I can see how guys would have gone home and abused their wife/family. The violence was unbelievable which resulted in many bars in the area being closed by 9.30pm. The mindset of these thugs is totally unbelievable.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 03/05/2012 00:31

Instances of DV also massively increase over a bank holiday weekend. Spending more time together than usual, change in routine, alcohol etc.
Police call outs tend to increase around Monday tea time Sad

I think that's my quote, Boring. When Newcastle lost a match, I used to encourage X to stay out for the night (preferably with other NU fans, so they'd all get maudlin together and trash a few municipal flower beds instead of their wives.)

It's true statistically as well as anecdotally.

garlicbutty · 03/05/2012 00:46

Y, ICan, true about the unbearable pressure of spending 2 whole days with their family also :(

tallwivglasses · 03/05/2012 01:07

"When Newcastle lost a match, I used to encourage X to stay out for the night (preferably with other NU fans, so they'd all get maudlin together and trash a few municipal flower beds instead of their wives.)"

mn quote of the week? Poetic and brilliant.

tallwivglasses · 03/05/2012 01:13

AND the one quoted in the OP.

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 03/05/2012 01:44

this is a fact that they've taught on the freedom programme for years. maybe we shouldn't blame the football or the alcohol just the abusive twats who think it's ok to hit their partner

izzyizin · 03/05/2012 02:51

By way of evidence in support: "Summary of story from BBC News, September 19, 2011

Strathclyde police have reported an increase in domestic abuse after an Old Firm (between Celtic and Rangers) football match on Sunday.

Police data shows an increase to 142 cases, in comparison to an average Old Firm weekend of 107 and an average weekend of 67.

There were 18 serious assaults, a drop on the average Old Firm weekend of 23 and higher than the average weekend of eight. The figures were calculated from evidence gathered by the force between April 1, 2004 and September 15 this year.

A Police spokesperson said: ?These are not just a set of statistics about crime on an Old Firm weekend. Behind every one is a victim, a family and a community blighted by the violence that, sadly, is still attaching itself to this fixture.?

Mhairi McGowan, operations manager for Assist which works with domestic violence victims, said: ?For the first time in seven-years, due to the volume of people referred to us, we?ve been unable to give courts the information they need, prior to court starting"

Regardless of whether he's a football fan, any man who allows his emotions to spill over into giving his wife/partner/significant other a back hander is 'THAT cuntish and feeble' and it is sad and it makes me angry too, bn.

As an aside, although it may not be considered by some to to be appropriate to raise this matter on your thread, it should be a matter of concern to us all that there has been increase in the numbers of crimes of violence perpetrated by women at a time when the statistics for crimes of violence by men are showing a decrease in numbers.

Stats can be subject to political whim inaccurate reporting and IMO this unprecedented increase requires further scrutiny and investigation.

boringnickname · 03/05/2012 09:13

yes izzy, i agree

I guess I should take pains to point out that most football fans are not like this! I have a friend who regularly attends footy matches - total antithesis of thug
