Contraception!

hello,

There have been a few threads in the past but incase any new people have thoughts-Mirena or IUD. Apparently Mirena is relatively new and expensive so gp might not have it or recommend it but it seems to be the better option over the general coil. I can't believe as women we have to go through all this on top of everything else!!! But needs must etc. What do you suggest copper coil or the hormone one (lighter periods and sometimes no periods!)

Feeling very sad about all the subject headings in this category hope you are all coping.

Thanks

What is your question? What kind of coil do people recommend? I think the mirena is more effective.

There is a 'family planning topic' OP if you prefer.

Mirena is not that new and GPs are generally very happy to offer them as they are initially expensive but very good value if used for the full 3 years as intended. I have a Mirena, getting a replacement soon and I have been very happy with it - not got pregnant, virtually no periods. But some people hate them.

Copper coil also reliable (generally) but can cause worse periods I believe.

Yes,sorry that ws my question which do people prefer. I would prefer little or no period but was concerned about the hormone. I don't want either as I hate the idea of having something there permanently but it is worth it for family planning. Many thanks guys

It is a very low dose of hormones, much lower than being on the mini pill. I didn't get on with the mini pill but Mirena was fab for me.

The family planning association has a tool to help you choose a contraceptive that suits you here
