i think i signed up for the guardian one once so i could check out a profile a friend of mine was going to meet up with

Ok. Usually I'd say no he's lying. BUT there is a well know scam going around. I'll see if I can find the site. As we have all changed emails. But it's a dating site in America or the company is based there and they are linked into other things. Porn, gambling, just a shady company.

What they do is buy information from other people, 3 rd party info. Anything that is missing they guess. I had a dating profile with my DoB wrong. He had one with his first name wrong....

All stuff went to junk folder. But you do know don't you that it's not fb that harvest this information. It's the apps? When you app something or like it, you give it permissions to access certain info. We put ours down to fb. As I had this,
Then deleted all third party apps and likes. Changed no more. He sets up a fb account and it starts! I'm not saying this is down to fb, maybe coincidence, maybe virus, maybe app. That would be my bet, apps harvesting info.

Don't know if this is true in your case or not.

thats so horrible. I wonder how much trouble those fucking viral fucking spammers cause people. I wonder how many relationships theyve destroyed

joblot · 07/04/2012 13:58

He could have joined before you met and not deleted it, quite reasonable as I've been a member on a dating site I joined years ago but never used or bothered to delete.

The key perhaps is whether he's been active or not- can you check last log in date?

Rhinosaurus · 07/04/2012 14:08

I am happily living with someone for years, but not long ago I signed up to a dating site as my friend had heard her boyfriend was still on there so we wanted to try and find him, and searches are limited without signing up.

I also, signed up for a sugar daddy site recently after a few wines with my friend, as we wanted to nose and laugh at some of the profiles which stretch credibility to the limit! at what sort of men would actually use he site. After doing this I have been deluged by emails from sugar daddies wanting me allegedly LOL

He has definitely signed up for this himself due to the password, the question is, why?

Houseofplain · 07/04/2012 14:46

He hasn't necessarily signed up for it though. I say this because the profile has been unused, not accessed, no history.

I had this exact problem and one of my passwords was used for my profile. There is this thing going around when I googled it. Still cant find the site. But basically it buys third party information, including illegally gained information, it uses aps and things to harvest information and put tracking on your pc, phone, pad, whatever.

This could all be him. But then it may not. As I can say this is exactly what happened to me. All junk so took me ages to notice and I had a phony dating profile filled out. Then it happened to my dh. It is also scarily common. They also guess things like first name and DOB, if they haven't harvested that.Thankfully no more since I changed email and rebuilt the pc, used in private on the pad, so no cookies are saved. Oh and took off all my likes and apps off.

I wouldn't be saying he had definitely done anything. I certainly definitely did not sign up to a dating site, neither did my husband.

Thank you for all your responses.

To answer a few questions -

dp's dad is divorced, but is not dating or anything like that as he is a nervous wreck.

I am not sure it is normal for a man to look at other women 1 week before he gets married, I certainly have not had these kind of thoughts - if I did then I wouldn't be getting married.

By normal man things I mean not emptying bins, forgetting to flush the loo - porn is not in this relationship I made that clear at the start.

After speaking with dp this evening, I think I really do believe him that he hasn't done it, his family are pretty warped and we both have a feeling this may be down to one of his younger brothers who enjoy making trouble..

Not sure still, I am going to monitor things very carefully from now on

It has his Dad's name - any site trying to replicate a registration would use his name and not know his Dad's.
It has his password - presumably only you and he know it?

He is registered

This is not just spam, the only question is whether or not your believe someone else e.g. his brother registered him (password?).

It cannot be fb etc., unless it is a fb linked application such as Zoosk in which case he still has to have been on the site and given it permission to use his data. I hope you get to the bottom of this OP.

FWIW no way should a man who is getting married next week be looking at dating sites to have a last check about to see if there is a better offer out there Hmm.
