Divorce in Ireland

My best friend needs to exit her marriage - her DH is addicted to alcohol and can't hold down a job. His behaviour towards her is awful and she has finally, after years of trying, decided to end it. She is the main breadwinner and looks after the 2 kids who are 16 and 18. They share a house at the moment. She is going to see a lawyer next week but I have read online that you have to be separated for 4 years before you can get a divorce. How does that work then? Anyone got any useful advice/experience?

Thanks for info holy, I will tell her about it. I really don't know how she is going to resolve it because he will not want to separate - he is comfy where he is and doesn't want to change.

Are you asking about divorce in Eire which is a state of the European Union, or divorce in Northern Ireland which is part of UK?

PilgrimSoul · 04/11/2011 21:01

Her first step is a separation agreement or judicial separation. The terms that are thrashed out for these normally stand for the divorce. Might be different in this case as both children will be over 18 at the time of divorce.

Some info here www.citizensinformation.ie/en/birth_family_relationships/separation_and_divorce/legal_options_following_marital_breakdown.html

She could try the family mediation service, but afaik there is a waiting list.

izzywhizzysgunpowderplot The Irish Republic and the UK were both 'states' of the EU last I heard.
