Keep finding porn on the computer

Tooembarassedtousename · 20/11/2005 11:56

Nearly every day I turn the computer on and go into media player theres some sort pf clip of a porn. I went on this morning and again went to put some music on and there was more. On the desktop there was an icon for porn (since deleted) I confronted dh and said I don't mind it but I like top have the choice of when to view it and that finding it offensive now. Dh swares it wasn't him and is shocked that I'm calling him a liar we've had such a big row. I'm really upset as were close we don't argue like this very often.
I just wanted to know is it possible that someone gan access to my computer from an external point or something?
Any advice would be much appreciated

have either of you installed any downloaded software? (including the kind of software you sometimes get when you visit a site - you'll usually see a message which says "do you want to download and install ...)

I'm asking as they often come with add-ons - usually it's ad ware (the programmes that make pop up windows appear with ads on all over the place). but it can be porn.

is your computer running slowly and (possibly the most important) do you have a dial up modem and have you checked your phone bill lately?

starandsnowshaker · 20/11/2005 12:00

check for virus my best friend nearly split up with her dp cos of it and it turned out to be a virus even though they had norton etc cant remember how the found it but will find out

SenoraPostrophe · 20/11/2005 12:01

...also hacked software can do this. The worst I've ever seen evidently came with a hacked version of photoshop. there was porn all over the computer and we had to reinstall (it was a neighbour's computer - we initially suspected her dh too)

SenoraPostrophe · 20/11/2005 12:02

norton doesn't find them because technically they're not viruses (usually)

IlanaK · 20/11/2005 12:02

This happened to us and it was ad-ware. You need to download something to check it and delete it. And deleting the icon from your desktop won't work. It just keeps coming back.

SenoraPostrophe · 20/11/2005 12:04

get ad-aware - if that doesn't fix it you may need to reinstall.

hub2dee · 20/11/2005 12:37

Or you could move to the darkside, my friends...

Apple's OS X operating system is, for all intents and purposes, virus and malware free.

I'd run ad aware (probably twice, with a reboot in between), and also try Spy Bot Search & Destroy . Both used together should be effective. You may also want to configure your router, to work in 'stealth' mode - not responding to pings etc. etc. - ask your ISP !

SenoraPostrophe · 20/11/2005 12:41

hub: it isn't virus free.

dodgy software for Macs is just as likely to cause problems - after all, os isn't a tiny minority OS any more - it is linux.

hub2dee · 20/11/2005 13:19

Hi SenoraP,

I believe there are some virii that have been authored (I tried to google this once, to find some; failed miserably), but I have not seen any virii on any mac (aside from windows. exes etc. received by e-mail, LOL). There are a fair few Mac users on MN yet there never seem to be any virus stories nor malware scares on here.

The virus signature library for native linux / OS X has got to be miniscule compared to those which can affect Windows, and the routine security patches which are released surely lead the way in showing Mircosoft how it should be done, IYSWIM.

Mac users routinely don't run anti-virus software for good reason... at the moment it's not needed. I'm not saying this status quo will remain forever.

Can you point me towards some nice 'dodgy' software for macs ? You might find some which cause memory leaks etc. (ie. poorly written so crash), but I've yet to come across any malware in the same way that it seems to 'turn up' uninvited on Windows boxes.

SenoraP - we're thick as thieves, us Mac users, LOL

Hi Pruni and dh !

Better than 'is Chanel Rouge Noire really an all-time classic nail varnish colour ? Discuss'

Is he a Nikon or Canon man ? (I'm Canon)

Talk about 'dark side'

LOL

SenoraPostrophe · 20/11/2005 14:55

By "dodgy software" I meant hacked software. I wouldn't know where to find that - it was certainly hacked software that caused a similar porn problem on my neighbour's PC. Linux/Mac does have just as many potential hiding places for viruses etc - it is only a matter of time before they become as common as pc viruses imo.

But anyway. I've run a PC for over 10 years with no viruses. I've had anti-virus protection for the last year or so.

Tooembarassedtousename · 20/11/2005 18:04

Thanks, a total of 344 items have been removed one I knew was a trojan, after running ad ware through twice....just about to try the spy bot one. Am totally naive with computers can someone reccommend an internet security?
i've had norton but has been useless

Hub2dee router? stealth mode? how do I do that?

tetun

stuff like this is caused by software rather than hacks 99% of the time - you just need to be careful about what you download.

if you don't know what a router is you probably don't have one. Just running ad aware and spybot every now and then is enough - and do be aware that most of the "items" it found would be tracking cookies, not actually anything sinister. Tracking cookies are used to trace ads and without the sites like mumsnet probably wouldn't exist.

hub2dee · 20/11/2005 19:08

LOL, SP, even hacked Mac software is sweeter. Totally disagree on future of virii on non-Windows platforms. Nothing will ever be as bad as Windows for virii or malware LOL. One thing I do agree with though - it's malware that causes Windows users more grief than viruses.

Anyway, tetun. Are you on broadband ? Do you have a box with lights between your computer and the wall ? That will be your ADSL modem / router. You'll need to google the instruction manual for it, or look in the bumph it came with to figure out how to make your connection a bit more secure. First thing: change the log on password (this is different to your ADSL login password). Second thing, if you can, get it to not respond to pings. This will be buried deep in menu land somewhere.

HTH
