relate for family Counselling?

myself and dd1(10) are going to be going to family Counselling with relate soon. i was just wondering if anyone had any experience of this and could tell me what happens at the first assesment and whether you found it helpful?

OP you don't say why you are going with DD, but Relate should have sent you some information about what family counselling involves, including the process of the first meeting.

I don't know much about Relate but I do work with families and I can tell you that a first meeting with a family is usually about trying to find out what everybody wants to get from family work, what they think the problems are, what they have tried to make them better, what works, what doesn't, and who else is involved/can be helpful etc. There might be a bit of history taking, of how long the problem(s) have been around ,what else was happening when they arose, what life was like before and so on.

Hope this helps OP but it is worth contacting Relate to ask for information about their family counselling service if they haven't already sent you some out.
