have you ever experienced proper "sparks" when you've met someone?

I mean proper, crackling, sparky electric feeling - that you and the other person have agreed you definitely both felt physically?

A few years ago, I sat next to a male friend who I'd only ever thought of as a friend, during a meal out. We were a big group squashed around a table and our legs ended up pressed against one another and I am not kidding but it was like something had been switched on between us - well that's how it felt to me. Like a proper charge, just from this bit of contact. It went on all evening, fizzing and crackling away.

I was in a v happy relationship at the time so didn't want to initiate any conversation about it with friend. I am single now (as is he), and I would dearly like to ask him if I had imagined it or if he had felt it too, but really I would feel like a loon bringing this up, unless it's something that other people have experienced too, on both sides so at least I have an idea of whether this does happen to two people at the same time or if it was just all in my head!

madonnawhore · 01/03/2011 00:35

OMG yes :)

SingingSands · 01/03/2011 00:45

Oooh yes... I'm going all tingly at the memory, and this is going back donkeys years! And yes, everyone in the room noticed too.

I'm glad I read this thread, its brought back an amazing memory!

lemonstartree · 01/03/2011 03:33

Yes, with my current dp. Both felt it, extremely strong physical reaction, like nothing I have ever felt before...not just wobbly knees, more like a slug in the stomach, makes me catch my breath sometimes!

and too early to say what will happen - only been together since November - but so far, so very good!

textualhealing · 01/03/2011 06:49

Agree with Sassybeast, I'd had this sensation with someone, a guy I knew from work (and school funnily enough.) I was about 23. Over the years, we'd had "relations" over a 3 decade period off and on. Standing in a pub in my forties, I felt a crackle at the back of my neck, low and behold, he was there. It never went past the physical but I've never felt attraction like it. It was sort of primal - had absolutely no choice but to act on it. He's out of my system now!

IngridBergmann · 01/03/2011 07:09

I have had the levitating thing (don't laugh!)

well it wasn't exactly levitating. Not physically. But it was a sensation as though I was being transported to a higher plane...somehow - I don't know, it's very hard to explain but I remember crying because of the sheer beauty and grandeur of the moment and it was definitely not an orgasm. It was something I could describe as a spiritual orgasm.

And I'm not woo or very religious or anything really.

Weirdy weirdy weird.

It'd be interesting to see how many people thought the sparks were a 'finding your soulmate' thing and how many thought they were just a sex thing. Seems like the latter for most..

IngridBergmann · 01/03/2011 10:34

I have had the sparky thing too but in many cases it was just the very light touch of someone's clothing on yours...iyswim. Happens a lot at the dentist's for some reason! It's like a particular level of pressure, like tickling, that can set your nerves tingling, and I don't think it has anything to do with soulmates or love.

RunforFun · 01/03/2011 10:34

I had the sparks thing once. It was just a sex thing and by God was it great ....

When I met DH 20 years ago I just knew he would be the man I married. I knew it was a wierd thing to feel at 21 but we are still together and very happy.

SparksFlew · 01/03/2011 10:47

if sparks = great sex but not a keeper, that's fine with me. I so would. (tells self to retain dignity and wait a while)

I think I may have spoken about this before on here! I have twice. The first time was when I first saw my (now ex) h and then again over a decade later. I was out for the evening with my h and glanced over at a total stranger and literally felt like I had been winded! I felt very sad and happy all at once and when we briefly spoke it was definitely the full on 'sparks' that you describe.
To cut a very very long story short I am now happily living with the 'stranger' and although obviously we don't electrocute each other on a daily basis anymore, its a very special and lovely relationship! Smile
Incidentally, I feel I should point out, I was very honest and open with my ex and we both worked very hard at our marriage for a long time before parting. We're still good pals!
Please keep us posted about your friend! x

SmashingNarcissistsMirrors · 01/03/2011 11:05

Yes quite a few times. However I don't think it's a sign you would have a good sustainable relationship. I mean hard drugs give you sparks too. This sort of chemical reaction is just how evolution has developed to get people to reproduce.

psiloveyou · 01/03/2011 11:05

I did one nye years eve years ago.
I was in a pub with friends he was the manager. We kept looking at each other. We didn't speak at all that night but it was as if we were the only people there. When the bells chimed we were on opposite sides of the room. We just made eye contact, he raised his glass to me and mouthed "hope it's a good one". I just wanted to leap over the bar a drag him off somewhere quiet Grin.

When I left he followed me to the door and I could physically feel his eyes on me as I walked away.

Anyway to cut a long story short. I went back to the pub a few nights later we got talking the sparks were still there. He had a long term girlfriend, I was single. We had a very hot affair for about 3 months until he moved to manage another pub out of the area. We could never have had a relationship we were so differant but oh my god it was electic. I've never experienced that before not even with DH.

adamschic · 01/03/2011 11:07

God yes, more than once. The memories fade over time but the last time I felt it was only a few years ago. Sat next to him the second time we met and the atmosphere was just that, electric. The first touch and kiss was amazing. Saying that it did fizzle out after we had been together a few times so I wouldn't give something like that much credence. He difinitely felt it too.

I don't believe it means you have met your soulmate and a slow burner can result in out of this world sex, over time.

It is extremely lovely and quite rare when it does happen though.

If you are both single then go for it and see.

joanne34 · 01/03/2011 11:15

Yes, my first proper boyfriend when I was 18 or 19.

He was 26.

I had an extra evening job in a cocktail bar, the first time i saw him he was finishing a shift and i was starting, we could not stop looking at each other, it was INSTANT ! I had to get to know him from that second, eventually I asked him out, we lasted 2 years.... he broke my heart, but he had a real alcohol problem.

After a few months of going out he went on holiday for 2 weeks, it was agony being away from him, i went to meet him at the airport, and when he came through the gates he ran, jumped over the barrier, picked me up and twirled me around in his arms.

That night we were sitting in the kitchen talking and I could feel electricity sparking between us, i felt dizzy and like i was loosing track of time, it was weird and i got really scared and had to leave. He said he felt it too !

:)

I will never forget him, never !

Boobalina · 01/03/2011 19:26

Me and my exh had it - proper cupids arrow stuff. I knew we would get married and have kids.
Shame it didnt last!

I have a overwhelming crush on my boss at the moment... I get a bit lost just checking him out in meetings, all of him, fingers, arms, ears, lips... I am sooo physically attracted to him - its really annoying. Mostly as he is married with kids!

cybilliberty · 01/03/2011 19:30

Yes, a ridiculously handsome tall dark haired man in a branch of Starbucks , he didnt have enough money to pay for his coffee and for some reason I felt bold enough to offer.

We sat and stared at each other , about 3 tables apart, for the next 40 mins then I had to go back to Mum duties and pick up my daughter.

He was GORGEOUS

THROB

wileycoyote · 01/03/2011 22:24

I have had it quite a bit - the first time was when I was 14 and my leg brushed against a guy's leg like in your story. He was 17 and I kept my leg there and enjoyed it as he rocked on his chair!. I have no idea whether it was reciprocated or not.

I had it with both my ex-husband, and also a recent lover. Both of us felt it on each occasion, and I know that other people noticed it between myself and the man I was with recently, as it was commented on.

Initially I couldn't decide whether it was wishful thinking on my part, but he confirmed that he felt the same and we could feel it crackle between us. The sex was amazing, but I also think it is something to do with sexual tension/chemistry, which can perhaps be purely physical, but is also an emotional connection of some sort.

Disclaimer - my flaky theory - The emotional connection can be that they are your 'type' psychologically, for whatever reason. I can go into a room and have a radar for the bloke that I will have fantastic chemistry with. However, this is not necessarily good/sensible/functional (except at first) Grin

DH does literally give me little electric shocks when he touches me, he's a bit odd and builds up a static charge Confused
