Told a pointless lie - now feel very very stupid

I was dropping ds at playgroup today when I saw a mum who I really like. When she apologised for not ringing me over the holidays, I said that I had been away in Spain for a month (I had only really gone for 2 weeks). Now I feel so utterly stupid - i really like this woman and we have a lot in common, just at that 'starting out stage' of friendship IYKWIM. Now I feel that if she meets my dh or any of my other friends and mentions my 'month-long' holiday to Spain I will be found out and look like a right idiot. I know it is so petty but I feel so bad and stupid about it.

So embarrassed I have changed my name - would appreceiate an objective opinion!!

Why did I do that??? I feel like I have jepordised a friendship before it really started and I feel so cross with myself...

Can you pretend you said "I was in Spain last month" rather than "for a month" or did you go into more detail...?

doormat · 10/09/2003 11:18

Dont feel cross, just make it as a passing joke next time you see her.
like for instance
"oh I was only messing it was really 2 weeks in spain but in the garden it seemed like another 2 weeks as I still wanted to relive our hols"
maybe something along those lines will get you out of you pickle.Good luck and dont let this spoil a new friendship

WideWebWitch · 10/09/2003 11:18

I don't think it's that awful - why don't you just call her and say "I was in a bit of a daze this morning, we had 2 weeks in Spain, a month was wishful thinking. Anyway, it was great, how are you? " I'm sure if you're casual and friendly it'll be fine. Really.

Oh good, I can come out of the closet too then, as a fellow occassional over-exaggerator (sp?) . I get really frustrated when I hear myself do it, they are never really massive but I just think 'what is wrong with you woman, JUST SHUT UP !!!! It is much better now post-teenage years but I do still have to keep myself in check every now and then.

Jenie · 10/09/2003 11:46

Everyone over exagerates at some point and this was yours. Don't even think about it again and if she brings it up laugh and say "I wish it was a month, no we were only gone for 2 weeks" smile indulgently (sp) and leave it at that. She'll think that it was her hearing and you'll know better in the future.

Oh unless she's on mumsnet now reading this that is......

RushingAround · 10/09/2003 12:42

I Thought it seemed a bit of a long time when you said a month this morning...

Only kidding

cathncait · 10/09/2003 12:57

pantsonfire · 10/09/2003 13:00

Wow, I thought it would be something more heavy than this! I agree with the others, pass it off - hope the friendship goes well

RushingAround · 10/09/2003 13:06

But it Was you I saw in Sainsbury's in the distance that time in the summer...?

Am only joking because all the advice below is spot on. Don't worry, gauge it when you next see her, either to make a joke of it, or brush it off.
We've all been thru' similar things I'm sure.

Wink

My mouth just seems to run away from me.

I reckon that it stems from when I was a kid. I was moved around a lot, changing schools etc due to an everchanging parenting situation (divorce and the ensuing confusion). In order to get the other kids to like me or to be accepted into the new class I used to embellish the truth to make myself sound interesting and fun to be with. Sunds stupid now but if you start thinking like that at 6 years old, it's kind of hard to convince yourself otherwise. I am trying (and succeeding) though

Cam · 11/09/2003 11:38

pantsonfire, tell your dh not to drop you in it with her and never mention it again, unless of course she asks you where you stayed, how much it cost for a month, how your kids coped with being away for so long etc,etc......!! I would say the one about it being LAST month, oh the hol itself was for 2 weeks. I bet you only said it anyway to make her feel better about not phoning you. So its her fault.

Bloss, perhaps it is an excuse ? There are lots of other things from my slightly messed up childhood that I am now over, so why should this one be different ?
