honeymoon cystitis - anyone else get this

kepler10b · 01/02/2011 14:24

after a bit of a vigorous session or two with OH at the weekend i came down with really bad cystitis. this is the 2nd time this has happened in the last few months. it's so bad i can't work properly and have to get antibiotics from the gp and even end up in tears.

OH is feeling horribly guilty and saying he's not going to ask me for sex anymore.....i too want to enjoy our sex life but am a bit scared it will trigger another attack.

it's not as if we are newlyweds, it's going to be our 8th anniversary this year. but i do think an active sex life is an important part of a happy relationship. are we destined to a life of abstinence or completely vanilla encounters?

does anyone else get this and how do you cope with it?

  1. wee before
  2. wee straight after
  3. make sure you are not dehydrated
  4. lots of lubrication
JamieLeeCurtis · 01/02/2011 14:29
  1. alcohol can trigger it (presumably linked to dehydration)
  2. try drinking cranberry juice
KikiJane · 01/02/2011 14:30

Make sure you're both freshly showered before you have sex. It's often caused by (normal) bacteria entering the urinary tract, and this can be minimised by keeping both 'areas' involved as clean as possible before contact. And obviously no going from bum to vagina with hands or penis.

Make sure you empty your bladder before and after sex.

Drink plenty of water. Cranberry juice is the classic thing to drink to avoid/cope with UTIs.

Your doctor should have advised you on this when you visited for the antibiotics, it being the second time in a few months.

Thingumy · 01/02/2011 14:30

I used to suffer a bit with it.

Make sure you wash before and after and use lube.

I think if it happens all the time, you can actually take a antibiotic after sex but thankfully my bouts didn't happen each time.

info here

Maybe go a little bit easier and gradually build up after having a few quieter sessions?

Hope you feel better soon

JamieLeeCurtis · 01/02/2011 14:32

Yes, that reminds me.

  1. use wet toilet wipes when wiping your bum, instead of normal toilet paper
  2. if you've had a vigourous bout - drink loads of water afterwards to flush out any bacteria that have got in
kepler10b · 01/02/2011 14:36

thanks guys. we have had sex a lot of times without it triggering an attack but now it has happened more than once it has made me a bit nervous because the attacks are so horrible (and inconvenient). i've heard contradictory things about cranberry juice - some say good others say it can make it worse.

I take cranberry tablets now and fingers crossed haven't suffered for 2 years, I also do the seeing before and after and use toilet wipes.

JamieLeeCurtis · 01/02/2011 14:43

My sympathies, BTW - I used to get it regularly before I started doing all the things above. It really is a horrible thing

blondegirl1979 · 01/02/2011 14:54

I used to get this quite a lot, have unfortuently had it again in the last couple of weeks, which then somehow spread into a bacterial thing too, so 2 lots of antibiotics, lots of drinking of water and cranberry etc. Hopefully feeling bettter now, but nervous about it happening again next time.

This isnt the case for the OP, but it can sometimes be triggered by being with a new partner, which I think is the case with me sometimes. Hadnt tried the lube option though - does that really work...as am thinking that putting "anything else" around that area would be a bad thing rather than good ?

kepler10b · 01/02/2011 14:58

@blondegirl1979 we were using lube and still got this. i'm trying to cast my mind back and thinking that as well as some quite energetic thrusting there might have also been a bit of finger around the bottom area which might have later have been used in the front area (sorry for TMI!)

Lube lessens the friction (obviously), and therefore reduces the likelihood of any kind of minor grazing. It also acts as a kind of barrier, sort of like if you put Vaseline around your nostrils in the summer to lessen hayfever!

munkysea · 01/02/2011 16:42

I used to get this every 3 months or so. I eventually got fed up and popped to the doctors who gave me a short course of antibiotics and I haven't had a single bout in over 6 months.

Apparently a vaccine is being developed. Hallelujah!

kepler10b · 01/02/2011 16:44

a vaccine....oh that sounds perfect. fingers crossed.

I always have a wee after sex to flush any bacteria that might get pushed into the bladder and I find Robinsons lemon barley water very helpful

merrywidow · 01/02/2011 18:33

drink bicarbonate of soda, tastes vile but seems to work for me

AnyFucker · 01/02/2011 18:49

yes, I suffer with this occasionally

it is agonising and many times I have been sat on the loo at 1am, 2am, 3am, 4am etc etc crying with the pain

always seemed to srike on bloody holiday too !

I have sat in a few walk-in centres/A+E depts for several hours in far-flung places, I can tell you Blush

it is linked to "vigorous" activity for me.
There is some excellent advice on this thread, and I seem to be able to control it now using those measures

unfortunately as you get older, it is more likely to happen Sad

reluctanthomosapien · 01/02/2011 18:54

Cranberry tablets are better than the juice, IMHO, much more concentrated hit of whatever it is that stops the bacteria clinging to the bladder wall (or whatever it is that cranberry does). I used to pop a couple straight after an, ahem, rigorous session and never had cystitis problems again (and I used to get it constantly). You can get them in Superdrug or Holland & Barrett.

Also, if you happen to know anyone heading off to Spain soon, there's a brilliant over the counter remedy they sell there called Mictra-something or other. Turns your wee orange for a couple of days, but works better than any anti-biotic I've ever had for this condition.

Ariesgirl · 01/02/2011 18:56

I have much sympathy with you. I once had to go to hospital thinking I had internal bleeding I had such a severe bout ( loads of blood and pus in my pee). It was completely agonising, and of course while I was on holiday, luckily in this country. They even x rayed my kidneys looking for a tumour

Anyway, after a few recurring bouts, I concluded we would have to take it easy for a few months and have been absolutely scrupulous about hygiene since. He washes his hands and bits before coming anywhere near me, I pee before and after (well usually I do, but at the moment we're desperately TTC), drink loads of water and shower almost as soon as we're done. Such romance, non?

PenguinArmy · 01/02/2011 18:57

I've had it this week for exactly the same reason.
