As the title says my OH has really bad breath. He's a smoker which is part of the cause as I am a non smoker.

But he has always been a smoker and I have always been a non smoker and when we first met it wasn't such an issue.Although I still didn't find it that pleasant. After I had children I became more sensitive to certain smells etc and now I find it reallty bad.

BUT on top of that he also seems to have a real problem with bad breath. He suffers from asthma and I'm not sure whether the inhalers he takes cause it but he really does suffer from a quite horrible case of bad breath.

I have discussed this issue with him in a tactful way.Even suggesting it could be the inhalers but he has done nothing about it.He does clean his teeth and use mouthwash twice a day but theres still an underlying smell. Its now been going on for a few years.

The thing is its obviously puts me off kissing him and thus as a knock on effect with intimacy.

He complains I don't kiss him enough etc.But I don't want to because even cuddling him involves me tryng to discreetly turn my head.

Is it me whos wrong here.Surely he can't moan that I don't kiss him enough when he's fully aware of the reason why.

Get him an appointment with the dentist.

Get a tongue scraper for him,bad breath often comes from the tongue.

Not sure what else you can do other than be supportive with finding a cure or helping him to give up smoking.

He needs to be proactive with his health issues.

He goes to the dentist regularly and as I said cleans his teeth, mouthwash etc regularly.Has tried numerous times to give up smoking but when he does the bad breath smell is still there.the smoking breath is just part of it.

He just doesn't want to do anything else about it apart from moan that I don't kiss him enogh. But would anyone want to?Its really bad.

Could it be something to do with his diet? Some bad breath smells come right up from the stomach...although I don't really know what or how this works.

bamboobutton · 31/01/2011 13:45

could it be tonsil stones? does he cough up littl yellowy blobs that smell horrific?

womblingfree1970 · 31/01/2011 13:52

no he doesn't do that. But he does have tonsilitus now and again. And this certainly seems to be coming from the back of the throat rather than the mouth.

But the main issue now is is that he won't do anything about it.So I can't help him now.But that he complains I don't kiss him much and I won't because its disgusting and so its having a knock on effect.

And its like he's passing the buck now saying lack of sex, intimacy is down to me.But actually lack of sex, intimacy is down to not wanting to even kiss him to even start anything.

A trip to the GP then?

You'll have to keep explaining that his bad breath is effecting your relationship and he needs to quit the self pity and to sort out the brunt of the problem.

You are going to have to talk to him, Perhaps he has undiagnosed gum disease, or a stomach problem. Halitosis is caused by many things, not just the evil weed and can indicate a whole host of medical issues.

If he has gum disease, he could lose teeth... that ought to focus his attention. Heart disease IIRC can cause bad breath sometimes too.

There are some dentists who specialise in this. What type of toothbrush/paste is he using? My dh had a terrible few months when he switched to one of those 'sonic' brushes but wasn't using it correctly. He ended up with gum 'pockets' and tooth decay. His dentist recommended interdental brushes which he does religiously every day and he now uses the Oral B rotating brush. Sweet breath! (Apart from the booze and garlicHmm
