"i see it as someone who couldnt keep a 'Mr' or could never make a 'Mrs'"
Shock Shock Shock

I think you're a bit out of date there, AnotherMumOnHere.

I've always been a Ms, before I married, while I was married (kept my own name) and now. I managed to 'keep a man' for 18 years until he went and died on me. I don't think my marital status defines me, so I use Ms.

ItsGraceAgain · 24/01/2011 16:39

Debrett's says you're still a Mrs post-divorce (as Miss is supposed to denote a virgin!)

When I attend functions at Buck House, the footman announces me as Mrs MyMaidenName.

(I never have attended one, in case you're wondering Grin)

TattyDevine · 24/01/2011 16:42

I guess if she sees it as someone who couldn't "keep" a Mr or "make" a Mrs, so be it!

What a crock Biscuit

nickelbabysnatcher · 24/01/2011 16:45

Debrett's says you can use Ms when you're divorced. (you can keep Mrs but you get to use your own initial Shock

it also says you can be called whatever the hell you want to be called, and people have to abide by it!

ItsGraceAgain · 24/01/2011 17:00

That's great news, nickel! I'll tell the footman I'm a Ms Wink

"I've been a Ms since the age of 10 or 11 and my SAHM couldn't explain why she had to tell the milkman she was married, but my dad didn't."

Pretty much my reasons too. What possible legitimate interest could most of the people who I come into contact have in my marital status.

I feel rather bemused by the "couldn't get or keep a man" idea. Because of course, I am completely defined by that, aren't I? Hmm

gordyslovesheep · 24/01/2011 18:30

well i am a Mrs and my man walked out on me - much woe etc etc - so there you go!

TallyB · 24/01/2011 18:57

I went back to my maiden name about two years after I divorced, but kept it when I remarried. DSs didn't mind, and it helped me feel I had got my identity back. I was never happy with my married name, it never felt like me. In fact, on a couple of occasions I ignored people who addressed me by it because I'd forgotten that was now my name Blush

"Debrett's says you're still a Mrs post-divorce (as Miss is supposed to denote a virgin!)"

I chose to go back to being a miss, so that's highly appropriate. OK maybe not, or only if I was 44 yo virgin who'd undergone five immaculate conceptions Grin

AnotherMum Loving the Chubby Brown send-up! Do you take bookings? (She is joking, isn't she?)

TheDevilAndTheDeepBlueSea · 24/01/2011 20:01

AnotherMumOnHere What are you on about?

I'm a Ms, and remained a Ms while I was married, and now am still a Ms now I'm separated.

Then again, I am a bit of a slag.

FabbyChic · 24/01/2011 20:34

I kept my married name and just changed to Ms. My children always had their dad's names so I won't be reverting back to my maiden name which I never liked.

KikiJane · 24/01/2011 20:40

I don't really care what title I'm given. I'm not 'Miss' because I kept my married name after divorce. Miss MyMarriedName is my XH's sister, or my daughter.

But whenever people say "is it Mrs or Ms?" I'm never sure. I just say..."whatever -- I don't care".

oldraver · 24/01/2011 20:53

You can call yourself whatever you wish. I reverted to using my maiden name (though I am not divorced) and you do come up against a lot of "why have you changed your name" or the assumption that you have divorced and they then want decree absolute etc

No one needs to know the reason you have changed your name, as you are entitled to use either. I got several copies of my marriage certificate and used these to inform companies (bank, passport etc) that I was reverting to using my maiden name

gettingeasier · 24/01/2011 20:54

What Kiki said. Also loving the thought it may annoy ow Grinor xh at some point in the future

BuzzLightBeer · 24/01/2011 21:02

what an utterly knobbish comment. Hmm

KikiJane · 24/01/2011 22:19

Oh yeah, it really annoys XH's new fiancée, and that's enough for me!

Topspin · 25/01/2011 11:13

Have always been a Ms whatever my marital situation - totally irrelevant to anyone else whether I'm married or not.

StickyProblem · 26/01/2011 10:06

Topspin me too. Ms = female equivalent of Mr. What's not to like?
