We have just had our first ever contraceptive accident! The condom split and neither of us realised until too late.

Just about the ideal stage of my cycle for getting pregnant as well. I am in my 40's and I do not want another child.

Can you not take the MAP?

K12Mom · 28/12/2010 08:00

As you are in your 40s, the chances of you getting pregnant are slight (from an expert on fertility problems).

I wouldn't worry too much, but it might make sense to take the MAP if it would be a complete disaster if you got pregnant.

dejavuaswell · 28/12/2010 08:13

I am looking up the MAP - especially the where to get it part - right now. The thought of waiting in line with the hungover teens who had unprotected sex at a Christmas party is a bit grim.

PS I'm not blaming DH for this.

These things happen. You should be able to get it over the counter with a prescription in the UK, so you probably don't have to queue anywhere.

MrsBonkers · 28/12/2010 08:19

You can get it from most chemists.
I took it once years ago. I was a nervous wreck going in to ask for it. Just go in and ask to speak to the pharmasist privately. They are used to this for all kinds of things so no-one in the shop will be any the wiser.
Asking for it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.
Good luck.

MrsBonkers · 28/12/2010 08:19

Oh, and no need for a prescription in England.

my godmother had her last two children when she was 45 and 47 - so make sure you get it!

deludedfool · 28/12/2010 09:32

Fell pregnant instantly in forties. If you always fell pregnant easily, then don't necessarily think that just because you are in your forties, it won't happen that easily. MAP required.

IAmReallyFabNow · 28/12/2010 09:34

I should hope you aren't blaming your DH as it isn't his fault the condom split. Maybe bin the rest of the packet though.

AmandaCooper · 28/12/2010 09:43

There won't be any teenagers queuing for this in the chemists, it costs £27! If you go to the Levonelle website you can fill in the questionnaire online, print it off, then you just hand it to the pharmacist.

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 28/12/2010 09:45

Also fell pregnant immediately in 40s... Easy to get MAP - Boots will be open. You have to answer some questions and then they'll give it to you (approx £27).

HelenaRose · 28/12/2010 12:28

Or go to your doctors and it's free. (I remember being seventeen and having to shell out over £30 for this tiny pill; I was not happy.)

loopylou6 · 28/12/2010 12:35

You need to go today tho as it only works up to 72 hours after the deed, also pre prevention greatly declines after the first 24 hours.

CointreauVersial · 28/12/2010 12:39

It's funny isn't it? When you are ttc the window of opportunity seems to be infinitesimally small and the chances of conception impossibly remote, but when you just got a bit careless and have no intention of having any more dcs it happens at the drop of a hat!

dejavuaswell · 28/12/2010 13:33

Well I have taken the tablet and am sitting here waiting to see what side-effects I will get.

We have throw away the batch of condoms that let us down and got some new supplies.

My DH is wondering how he couldn't tell the condom had split because as he pointed out he was thinking about what things felt like down there! Wink

Glad you got it sorted. fwiw I have used it twice and have never had any side affects

CheekyLittleStocking · 29/12/2010 01:46

I have used it once and got mine from GP for free

StuffingGoldBrass · 29/12/2010 02:03

When was your last AF? (You don't need to answer obviously, just work out for yourself) Because if you just had one or are just due one, at your age, it's pretty unlikely anyway. Still, take the MAP and goo luck.

msboogie · 29/12/2010 02:16

chances of getting pregnant in your 40s slight? not necessarily so! not at all.
