Could do with relationship counceling - don't really know to what extent our problems are down to me or DH. Fear we're simply incompatable. He says he won't go but won't stop me.

Thing is I can't stand the idea of some kind of hippy drippy type who's done an evening course and thinks they're a good people person asking me 'and how does that make you feel?'. Steryotypical view of counceling I know, but there you go.

Don't know where to start. Does anyone know someone who's really helped them who could help me?

Go to www.bacp.co.uk and "Find a Therapist". You can filter this down within your area to therapists dealing with relationship issues.

Do you know much about the different counselling models/have any idea which approach you'd prefer?

Noone who has done an evening course should/would be counselling.

It's a post grad course often in psychotherapy- takes 4 yrs at uni for an MA or years to do the Diploma. You need someone with BACP Accredited after their name- see previous post.

Anyone in the directory will be suitably qualified: eg diploma, MBACP etc. BACP Accred simply means you're more experienced and have done a minimum 400 hours of counselling and met the accreditation standards. I qualified to practise this year, passing the diploma, and am a member of BACP and featured in the directory. I've completed between 100-200 counselling hours: I've just not done enough to meet accreditation yet. Some of the people in the directory might be accredited with different bodies such as UKCP.

Try Relate. Their counsellor Andrea was great for us and is in south / west Sheffield

No I don't I'm afraid, that's why I'm not sure where to start. I have however read an account of a relationship councelling session in a magazine that involved personality questionaires and a 'relationship audit'. Having worked in Learning and Development for years I'm a bit sick of those type of exercises and feel they can be superficial. Although that might be different in a different field I suppose.

It's reassuring to read of rigerous training they need to complete and I'll definitely look for the relevant accreditation.

Thanks pinkumbrella for the pointer.

I've certainly never done a "relationship audit" or a "personality questionnaire" and I don't know any counsellors who have or would. Sounds positively ghastly.

I'd have a read about the different counselling models before you choose someone. Hope you get it sorted.
