Or does the judge at the decree absolute stage state it in the ruling?

I think its juat a matter is what you want to be called. Nothing official to it.

I went back to my maiden name when i recieved the decree nisi, no deed poll was necessary. I should add that some organisations would only accept the change of name with a copy of the absolute, but i changed my passport and driving licence with just the nisi.

I just let everyone know I was going back to my maiden name, some of the banks/passport/driving license wanted a copy of the absolute, but others insurance/TV etc just took my word for it.
Very liberating :)

banks, passports etc will want documentation either decree absolute or deed pole i think ? i did the deed pole, about £40-50 .....

HelloOutThere · 10/11/2010 23:07

yes - am loving getting the letters for things in my maiden name, i agree liberating! It's mainly for the official things like passport, bank account etc so that is good to know it's not too difficult for those things

Changing your name when you get married is just classified as adopting an assumed name, which is perfectly legal in the UK (like when actors and celebs use a stage name). It's never technically your 'real' name unless you changed it back then by deed poll, so you are totally free to go back to your maiden name or any other name you fancy!

EvilEyeButterPie · 10/11/2010 23:42

I changed my name to (then) DPs surname. It is completely free- you can just start using it, but you can also find forms online that you sign and get witnessed by somebody responsible (I used a friend who is a lecturer).

Google "free deed poll" or "change my name free"

I got my DA yesterday and checked with registry office and I can use maiden or married name, most places wont require proof but if they do it would be birth and marriage certs and DA. I decided to stick with married name so that I dont confuse the children, with the added bonus of really annoying the ex MIL!

Thanks for all that info Smile

As far as I am aware you can call yourself what you like as long as it is not for fraudulent purposes.

If it is your birth name then if anyone does want proof your birth certificate should suffice.

can I ask you about the DA? when the DN came through it said about some paperwork may need filling in about the children before the DA could be issued. Did you have to fill in anything else betwenn the DN and DS or just wait the 6 weeks and it was done automatically?
