...is a seriously rubbish broadcaster, isn't he?

OP posts:
SylvanianFamily · 23/07/2010 16:52

I,m still sad about the loss of Fi Glover. she was great in the night slot. some scandal drove her out, I recall

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 23/07/2010 19:10

Totally agree about Fi Glover Sylvanian.

NetworkGuy · 02/08/2010 19:47

"can't take to Richard Bacon - childish and self obsessed"

Yes, even if he had some good guests on FL late at night, he was too worried about how many friends on FaceBook he had, full of his 'ego'

"Rhod Sharp with his divinely relaxing style"
and "but brain dead Dotun"

Yes, Chalk and Cheese. I rarely listen when Dotun is on, but now and then enjoy hearing him being told "how it is" when he comes out with his spin on some aspect of Kenyan life, and the Kenyan reporter 'corrects' him (very gently!)

"can't stand Nicky Smug Campbell"

Oh, well said.

However, unlike a few, I do quite like Victoria D

I don't really miss Fi Glover (heard her full of her own importance when she was travelling the world to write her book about radio - she was in a studio in Chicago with a husband and wife team who have about 60 years broadcasting experience between them, and acting like she could teach them a trick or two.

I still listen to them, from time to time, but hardly bother with Fi on R4 Saturday Live, especially when one sometimes hears a pre-recorded one!

GabbyLoggon · 06/10/2010 11:03

Yes although I find the Gabby Logan facade fasinating and would like to know more.

She does spoil programmes for me; because she seems to be on such a tight reign.

Come on Gabby, step out of daddies shaddow. Your a big girl now.

I know your style has worked and made you
a toffess....but release the shackles. thanks

pagwatch · 06/10/2010 11:09

I listen in the morning and listen to drive.

I really like sheelagh and nicky campbell [ner] and even bacon is growing on me. But Peter allen is my fave - grumpy old git Grin

BTW Did any of you here him t'other night talking about CB cuts and tory conference. he said something along the lines of

'we are here discussing the cunting... cutting of child benefits'
LOL. he is so straight laced he must have been mortified

GabbyLoggon · 06/10/2010 16:15

Victoria Darbyshire? Brilliant interviewer;but does come across as biased against Labour. She does not let her human side show.

GabbyLoggon · 06/10/2010 16:19

Nicky and Sheila Brilliant intuitive. They treat big names as normal. Bravo. I thik it is because theyare NOT networkers. Who tend to be a bit masonic.

yama · 06/10/2010 16:27

I love Richard Bacon. Daytime radio is a complete luxury for me on maternity leave and I'm savouring it.

I have the radio on in every room and wander about in a happy daze.

nameymcnamechange · 06/10/2010 16:28

Bring back Ian Payne, I say.

Richard Bacon is ok but I feel the afternoons are a bit dumbed down now and there's lots of chitter chatter about trivia - and I get plenty of that from Mumsnet, thank you very much.

momino · 06/10/2010 16:41

I used to hate smug Nicky but think he and Sheilagh have such a rapport that I really like listening to them in the morning.

I quite like Richard Bacon (I listen to him on 6Music as well).

I love the Mayo/Kermode film program on Fridays.

Can't stand Victoria.

HumphreyCobbler · 06/10/2010 16:44

I absolutely LOATHE Richard Bacon.

He is too stupid to know how stupid he is.

Lacking depth is a good description Seeker.

momino · 06/10/2010 20:49

oh, and I love Eddie Mair on radio 4's PM.

Rentatoast · 08/10/2010 09:24

Can't stand him, must have a guardian angel who saved his career after allegedly caught with class A's.

Birchos · 08/10/2010 21:45

Hey I do a podcast with a woman who contributes to Richard Bacon's show, Tess Morris. It's a laid back arts show which is geared towards women. i think if you like 5 live, especially Simon Mayo - it might be up your street.

It's me and two other women talking about what's we've enjoyed reading, watching and listening to this month. With a whole heap of nostalgia thrown in - eg this month we talk a lot about Judy Blume!

Have a listen, I'd love to hear what you think.

You can download it here so you can play it on your mp3 player.

Richard Bacon is ok I think, he's growing on me.

He's actually, if you give him a chance, at times I think very clever in his interviews. He'll be all chatty, matey, arselickin and then come in bosh with a gentle intrusive question that the interviewee sort of can't avoid answering.

Mayo is a great low key interviewer but makes all sorts of weird over intimate comments. He said something very odd to Tim Robbins the other day and it made me want to go wash my hands. Also Mayo can be hugely precious at times.

love kermode mayo best. But R Bacon is growing on me. He was really good with Michael Parkinson but didn't ask him about meg ryan which I wish he had.

Marlinspike · 19/10/2010 23:57

Am I alone in thinking that 5live seem to have had a bit of a "clear out" of presenters over the last 6 months? Is this in preparation for the big move to media city in Salford?

I am not a big Richard Bacon fan; I find that he talks over his guests (who are indeed of a lesser quality now, as a previous post has mentioned.) Gabby Logan is OK, but she needs to improve her radio skills - the news team must get mightily pissed off with her, as she's always late going to them! I know Nicky Campbell's an arrogant arse, but I have had a bit of a crush on him for many years, and I think his rapport with Shelagh is great! Does anyone remember when he presented the show with Victoria Derbyshire and he made her cry???

Longstocking2 · 20/10/2010 00:00

No I didn't Marlin, what did he say to her???

Marlinspike · 20/10/2010 00:06

I think she had been interviewing a politician and the link back to Nicky went a bit awry. he said something, handed back to her, then you heard him say "are you alright?" (in a bit of an unsympathetic way). I read afterwards that she had been crying; I think she was preggers at the time so possibly a bit hormonal. They didn't last long doing the breakfast show together as the chemistry just wasn't there like it is between Nicky and Shelagh.

I like Peter Allen as well, although he's slowly turning into a caricature of a grumpy old man.

Love the "cunting" of child benefit! [hgrin]

Longstocking2 · 20/10/2010 00:07

I like Peter Allen too but he is very partial and doesn't conceal it at all.

I really like Nicky but can't take too much of him.

NetworkGuy · 07/11/2010 11:23

Well, first, I'd agree that Richard Bacon isn't much cop. I felt he was 'OK' in the late evening slot, but also, with the SHH Club and FaceBook 'popularity' thing his ego seemed to be his driver, but he's not alone (having had at least 3 'friend requests' from radio presenters who clearly think his 'fan' numbers will help with their career).

Must admit to not being a regular listener at lunch time, because (despite many complaints about You and Yours, I quite enjoy some aspects, though having two consumer issues shows [David Vine seems to cover similar topics reasonably often] at lunch time might be bad).

Maybe I will restart my old habit of recording the R4 output from my DAB radio onto PC [there's some software called Total Recorder which I have used to record in 2 or 4 hour chunks, and now I have about 2000 GB of extra storage it'll take years of audio recordings to fill].

NetworkGuy · 07/11/2010 11:30

"Rhod Sharp with his divinely relaxing style, or another immature, self obsessed R5 live, but brain dead Dotton Adebyou"

Oh yes, I have no good words for Dotun, who sometimes thinks he 'knows all' about various cultures only to be stopped short by a 'local' telling him what the public there do/ like/ think.

Really enjoy Rhod Sharp, and happy to listen to him (or any stand-in) more than author and broadcaster Dotun.

NetworkGuy · 07/11/2010 11:34

The biggest fault (affecting R4 news shows and Five Live) in my view is "stopwatch radio" where that music "bed" that starts in minute 59 is a "cut off the interviewees" cue, and no matter how interesting the conversation, it has to be stopped so the 'precious' news, sport and travel can be 'on the hour'. Honestly, I can understand it a bit when there are the "pips" for 8am on R4, but not at 2am or 3am.

With R4, I find the severe scheduling the worst aspect, eg on Today (with the mandatory adverts (trails) for other programmes every 30 minutes (or is it 15?) and them trying to squash sport and weather and interviews in, and just as they get interesting, have to be cut short for trash half the time, plus whoever they speak to around 08:50 is guaranteed to be cut short, before they attempt to not crash the pips (which they manage now and then).

I have listened from time to time to a husband and wife team on WGN, Chicago, and if they are talking to a guest or on the phone when it hits the "pips" then they can opt to carry on, and delay the news etc by a minute or three or five if they need to (30 years experience, so I guess all their producers are relative newcomers and allow some flexibility).

NetworkGuy · 07/11/2010 12:20

Loved your comment on Dotun, ecmr (ooops, just noticed 23 July @ 16:45) and "Can you imagine that happening on any other programme on any other channel with women other than on Womans Hour?" - well, in Liverpool, before they admitted an all talk station wasn't making money and switched to more music and some talk, CityTalk had "Bloke Talk" with Duncan Barkes on a Saturday, followed by Kim Hughes.

Kim had a (primarily) female group (with a cocktail making barman, sometimes a [male] wine expert, and less often, a [male] hair stylist). They covered every topic but gossip about people in/ from Liverpool was tops, with drinking a close second !! It was a one hour show but Kim was also doing the breakfast show during the week, with the late Phil Easton.

Longstocking2 · 08/11/2010 13:54

I think Richard Bacon can be good.
He has something of Mayo's unexpected ease with interviewing, they seem fairly gentle so can get an interviewee on their back in 'rub my tummy' position and ask some corking questions.
When he's bad he's terrible. Occasionally sycophantic on an Olympic scale but in his favour he laughs at himself very readily (more so than Mayo does who is a bit Lady Bracknell underneath imho)
Bacon just needs a Producer with a strong hand. His strengths are his ease with the medium, his never ending appreciation of his luck in being anywhere on air and his real enthsiasm for everything.
If you heard him talking about the mistake of buying a jacuzzi and having it in the garden and people watching him from the train and never using it. very very funny.
Now Kermode and Mayo are great, BUT both are getting a little carried away with their own importance and their luvvie mates. They need to rein that right back imho. Also Mayo 'playing dumb' act is wearing thin, I mean, do something else man, enhance your range!

Derbyshire is so pleased with herself she makes me chunder and on occasion she is offensive and presumptious etc etc She can be good tho. I like Nicky but the flirty flirty thing is dull.

lljkk · 12/11/2010 06:04

Bacon is so self-important. Constantly name-dropping: "I presented some award show" "I chatted with some famous person at a movie premier" -- he's constantly referring back to his own fame and connections, it's very grating. And I hate the format of the Thursday afternoon HELP slot (blech).

I always thought Simon Mayo was quite thick, tbh, although in a perfectly personable sort of way.
