Inspired by another thread about how rubbish the search functionality on Sounds is.

It’s also annoying that there are no listener reviews. So a few times I’ve listened to some pretty poor quality dramas etc and really wished I could have read a review first.

So I thought it would be good to have a thread for this so people can share recommendations for shows they liked (or warnings for those they didn’t!)

I’ll start with:
Really enjoyed a dramatisation of Behind the Scenes at the Museum (Kate Atkinson)
plus just listened to the Barchester Chronicles which I enjoyed.

I like fiction especially detective and historical, but post about anything you like on Sounds. There’s so much on there but it’s hard to navigate and the length of time things are available for is so random.

Getting on a flight now so look forward to reading later!

Oh and Cadfael The Virgin in the Ice

Conversations from a long marriage. Funny, sad and wonderful with Joanna Lumley. I wish they would record another season.

I thought the problem with getting people overseas to pay was down to all the different ways subscrption broadcasting is managed in different countries, and it makes it too complicated.

I’m sure it could be sorted.

Denim4ever · 19/02/2026 09:23

The Radio 3 series The Essay had 4 episodes entitled Almost Famous that I really enjoyed. They last about 15 mins each

If the will and money is there, but I suspect they just can't be arsed.

Mwnci123 · 19/02/2026 16:18

Another vote for More or Less. I'm
enjoying Made in China at the moment.

FrostyMorn · 21/02/2026 09:02

Strong Message Here with Armando Ionnucci and guests is my current favourite Sounds podcast. A satirical but very cut through the nonsense look at politicians' latest catchphrases, truth avoidance etc. Always on the money and funny.

Hermiaxx · 21/02/2026 09:11

I’ve just started listening to Gudrun and am enjoying it - found it by accident spurred on by this thread!

I love ‘Old Harry’s Game’ but why oh why are there so few episodes and often they aren’t available (and lots of other brilliant programmes!)!!! Damn you BBC sounds!!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/03/2026 15:29

There's some cracking stuff on there at the moment (for my tastes, anyway).

The Loved One - Rupert Graves, Miranda Richardson, Richard Griffiths, 1990
I love this book and this is a great adaptation. Repeated to mark 60 years since Evelyn Waugh's death. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002s31c

Anybody Can Do Anything by Betty MacDonald - I've read lots of Betty MacDonald's very funny books and this reading does the book justice. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002rqbv

Frenchman's Creek, Daphne du Maurier - I thought this was just about the most romantic thing I'd ever read when I was 15. Very enjoyable hokum. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b909v2

Breaking Point, dramatisation of the Dick Francis novel Nerve, starring Michael Kitchen. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0418jfp

Skybunnee · 03/03/2026 15:37

A Good Read
More or Less
Thinking Allowed

are my regulars
Also The Bottom Line about business
and Thinking Allowed - sociology but random things of interest

Thank you OP

I adore Real Survival stories, plus I always listen to Newscast and Americast.

Strong message here is good but I preferred it when Helen Lewis was on.

Real Dictators is fab if you like history. And I quite like A short history of…

i always listen to More or Less and the News Quiz too.

The Search function is infuriating, as is the inability to change the playback speed by small iterations (on Spotify I listen at 1.1 or 1.2 - not an option on Sounds and I find Cautionary Tales too slow on 1 and far too fast on 1.25 - first world problems 😂)

Poledra · 03/03/2026 17:23

I was coming on to recommend The Interrogation to anyone who enjoyed crime series but ive just checked and only series 5 and 6 are available 😕

GenerousGardener · 03/03/2026 17:26

This Thing of Darkness

Sitwithit · 03/03/2026 17:29

@Vargas I've actually given up on Strong Message Here until Helen Lewis comes back (I really hope she does! I used to really enjoy it).

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g thank you, I've downloaded all of those, and for other enthusiasts note that some of them are not around long, 2-4 weeks.

BoredZelda · 03/03/2026 17:34

I love the sliced bread/toast series. Sliced Bread looks at various fads to see if they are the best thing since sliced bread. Toast looks at companies which went to the wall and why.

Willow12345 · 03/03/2026 17:56

I should add @@idontgetitdoyou that I’m really enjoying the Kate Atkinson you recommended and the dramatist and audio writer, Katie Hims, was also responsible for Black-Eyed Girls, which is fab.

Can you listen to these without having listened to the earlier series?

Great! Yes Katie Hims seems to be a bit of a legend. Thanks for the rec!

Can you listen to these without having listened to the earlier series?

You can, but you'd lose the detail on the relationship between the 2 main characters. I have gone hunting - if you have Spotify Premium or Audible, all the series are available on there (I appreciate these are paid-for services, so not the same as the access through BBC Sounds).

Tallestone · 03/03/2026 22:24

Iove limelight every series is so different.

Love Murder they wrote

Drama on 4 is different stand alone stories

Agatha Christie a vet elusive woman

Love bombed

Missing crypto Queen

The history bureau

The bomb

13 minutes presents Artumus 2

The missing sister

Carriie jade doesn't exist

The 6million gold scam

Ransom man

Crime next door

Strange but true crime

I didn't realise I had listened to so much!

andIsaid · 04/03/2026 19:21

Thank you for all of these - I agree that the search function is dreadful. This strikes me as a real pity because they would surely want people listening to their programs!

I really enjoy In Our Time - I especially love when they get into hard academic area like Quantum or Metaphysics. I am not academic so I love the "translation."

I also enjoy Start the Week and have read some good books as a result.

Moral Maze is fun for me even if a little annoying at times.

Archers! Hi @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g and thank you for all your hard work in that department! 😀

I love their drama - but have not listened lately. Flat Share was GREAT I thought. This Thing of Darkness is great.

Thank you all for my list!

Does anyone have good suggestions for Radio 3?

I would love some interesting programming on music.
