Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to have Kate present as you give birth, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

I'm more excited about the arrival of the beavers than anything else going on in Ambridge at the moment. I hope there will be a webcam.

Bets on how much of next week is set in the castle or on the way there/back? I'm bracing myself for at least 50%.

Exactly what I was going to say. And invertebrate Hannah.

Bloody Joy

She's so awful. Going on and on, saying please, please, please like that. She's a woman in her sixties, have some dignity for god's sake.

I'm assuming Hannah is massively winding her up with the space theme.

My heart lifted a little when Amber told Emma she wasn't sure if she wanted to marry George. He of course ran away like the immature specimen he is, couldn't actually do the adult thing and talk. But if his stupid mother and family hadn't decided to go along with the ridiculous marriage idea, and had told him not to be so silly, that he and amber needed to actually get to know each other first etc, he wouldn't have got so fixated in the idea in the first place.

DeanElderberry · 01/12/2025 19:38

Hannah (was it Hannah?) was taking a leaf out of Leonard's playbook and telling poke-nose Joy a Big Old Lie. Good tactic.

I think if they hadn’t supported it, both George and Amber would have been far more intent on seeing it through.

Quite possibly.

I do want it to all fall apart but I have a feeling the SW wrongly want a happy ending for George, so I think they'll stretch amber's indecision but she'll be back at the last minute.

Im in a quandary, I felt sorry for George because Chris was a bit OTT, but then I thought about what George did to Alice and can understand Chris's stance, but George wasn't a threat to Matha so he could have had a quiet word with Emma to say "don't do that again".
But no, he had to take Martha away even though the child was enjoying herself and George had left.
Wouldn't a washing machine smash every bone in a turkeys body? Mind you I did look up turkey plucker and they do look like the drum of a washing machine.
If Carrie has Arthuritus then that's not just going to go away with an ibuprofen. Talking as a RA sufferer myself, not being able to grip is a nightmare. You end up with sore banana fingers, which I have at the moment because I was picking up all the leaves from a neighbours garden that had covered mine. Grrrrr

I’m not sure Alice would ban George from seeing Martha. Chris’ stance is really about his feelings towards George and making a decision on behalf of Alice.

RegimentalSturgeon · 01/12/2025 20:51

Emmur can’t help lying, can she?
She didn’t tell Will in the churchyard before the wedding that she was upduffed. MUCH safer to pretend it was a honeymoon babay.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/12/2025 20:56

She did tell him, when he was having his "if you don't love me you don't have to marry me" worry. (She would have been in a bit of a fix if he'd decided to back out at that point, wouldn't she.)

Lalgarh · 01/12/2025 21:04

newtlover · 01/12/2025 21:29

I think Emma's tactic is working- I'm sure she said from the outset that if they tried to stand in Amber and George's way it would make them more determined.
Now she just needs to give Amber space and a listening ear.. And then she can say to George it was all Amber's decision. Job done.

RegimentalSturgeon · 01/12/2025 22:39

Oh bugger, @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime . Misremembered, and I was so sure.

Amber: something flies get stuck in.

Disagree strongly.
It seemed genuine to me. Also bullying implies repetition and pattern.

The actor is so good that one minute I find George an odious little scrote, the next I find him vulnerable and feel pity for him.

Chris was out of order.

I agree. He's that good. It's very annoying.

Part of me likes simplicity: Tom actor not very good = utter wazzock. Sorted.

I suspect that TV pay may be more than radio pay, though I don't know. It'll probably do more to boost her profile, anyway.

Sure, but TA is a hell of a lot more secure and a lot of acting parts will fit round it. If the TV series doesn't take off (which sounds distinctly possible) then she ends up with nothing plus a flop on her CV.

GoodQueenWenceslaus · 02/12/2025 08:53

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/11/2025 21:18

Just so.

If she provides him with a base, that will be where the police come when they want him for affray or whatever else. Her friends and neighbours (who don't have the Ambridge immunity to worrying about Grundys) will judge her by him.

And in any case, is he allowed to moved away from home while he is on licence? I genuinely don't know the answer to that, but I thought he isn't in a hostel because he is with one or both of his parents, and I am not sure a great-aunt would count as Close Family. Has she even met him?

His licence probably does require him to stay at a defined address, but it's possible to change it, and having a job offer elsewhere would be a very good reason to do so.

LillianGish · 02/12/2025 09:47

This is not going to go well when George discovers Emma has been advising Amber - she should have been advising George. This is his first girlfriend - and one met in rather unusual circumstances, the equivalent of a holiday romance that flounders when both parties return to real life. Of course he feels heartbroken, but that's life and you can't get through it without a bit of heartbreak. George is likely to see this as a massive betrayal - by Amber and worst of all by his mum. I'm not sure what Emma was thinking of to be honest.

ThreshAcre · 02/12/2025 09:50

Chris was out of order. He wasn't.

ExitPursuedByABare · 02/12/2025 10:18

Nice to hear Hannah again.

I’m sure the ‘lovely’ workshop would hold an implement she could have used to bash Joy around the chops for her incessantly whining pleeeeeeasse.

Chris wasn't out of order at all.
He acted exactly how I would have done in the circumstances.

TottersBlankly · 02/12/2025 10:28

Where was the workshop? At home or work? I couldn’t quite picture it.

Brefugee · 02/12/2025 11:01

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/12/2025 16:39

Oh, he only means harm some of the time! And only to people he dislikes, such as Hannah, or Neil, or Brad.

No, hang on, he doesn't dislike Brad. So shopping Brad to the cops was a bit gratuitous.

Shopping Brad was to save his own skin.

LillianGish · 02/12/2025 11:03

I imagined it to be at work @TottersBlankly, at Berrow, somewhere where the tractor might be. I couldn’t work out if Hannah was winding Joy up with the space theme. I thought she might do something pig related. I think what I find most irritating about Joy is that she has no proper hinterland - she’s just there to knit other randoms into the story, like a chess piece that can move anywhere (and do anything!!) She’s functional, but of no interest in her own right.

Brefugee · 02/12/2025 11:05

Space theme with A Spaceman Came Travelling (Chris de Burgh) on the speakers is perfect.

ETA: Doh! Pig related. HOGFATHER!

I don't think Emma deliberately chose to side with Amber as opposed to George. Amber asked her if she was 'sure' when she got married and Emma realised she hadn't been and had made the wrong decision. I thought it was a good conversation on both sides and drew on the past unlike some recent stories.
