I really enjoy them! Obviously Bill Nighy is amazing, but I enioy the rest of the cast
I love the dramatisation and comedy as well.

Any other reccs for R4 programmes or Audible or podcasts? I enjoy Wimsey, Paul Temple, In and Out of the Kitchen etc. Happy to access old series that are no longer on Sounds.

Conversations from a long marriage?

Absolute Power, where Stephen Fry is a dodgy lobbyist.

Reluctant Persuaders is a ridiculous but rather good Ad Agency comedy

HarrietteVane · 06/01/2025 16:53

I rather enjoyed the occasional 'Pilgrim' drama series (Sebastian Baczkiewicz), plus the Christopher Marlowe mysteries. Both on Sounds.

Outside that I suspect Cadfael might also appeal?

Humour wise I loved In and Out of the Kitchen, would be very interested in recommendations to replace that!

HarrietteVane · 06/01/2025 16:55

How do you feel about the newer Wimsey books from Jill Paton Walsh? I'm very taken with them but I know some hate them!

RubyDarke · 06/01/2025 17:08

John Moffat as Poirot
June Whitfield as Jane Marple
Brian Cox and Siobhan Redmond in McLevy
David Threlfall as (Father) Baldi
Anton Lesser as Falco

all crime dramas, none of them too gritty (though McLevy is darker than the others) and all brilliantly performed

Yes these are all great and I enjoyed all. I think I may have come to the end of all of these series on BBC Sounds sadly!

I haven't heard the first two, so will try them.

I wonder if there are more archive Cadfael ones I could find on audible.

Ah yes of course Converasations was great. Last series ending was a bitbof a shock!

I didn't get on with Ab Power, but will try Persuaders, thank you.

I love Pilgrim. Paul Hilton has the most amazing voice.
Sherlock and Co on Audible/Apple Music or via Goal Hanger.
As a Sherlockian of 40 years I was sceptical but it's a refreshing take ,rather like the Gatiss/ Moffat TV series.

CarefulN0w · 06/01/2025 18:38

The Anika series with Nicola Walker was good.

Edited

Have you tried the Poirot dramatisation on Audible with the wonderful Peter Dinklage as Poirot and Himesh Patel as Hastings? I thoroughly enjoyed it (apart from the slightly odd music but as Johnny Flynn is the composer I'll forgive him!)

Examconfusion · 25/01/2025 18:45

On apple podcast there’s a wonderful one called Nostalgic Mystery radio, you might find something you like on that

I have listened to all of these too (several times) and I worry I have now completed the entire BBC output. It's a bit concerning! I had to listen to a Len Deighton the other day, and it was disappointing. The Pilgrim series are very enjoyable though as PP haves said, so I envy you starting those.

I have found a lot of good stuff via the v excellent Shedunnit podcast on BBC Sounds and have subsequently listened to a few of the Bodies from the Library series (I think there are 6 books of short stories from Golden Age authors). https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Bodies-from-the-Library-Audiobook/B07DM726VJ?ref_pageloadid=gyzlDPY9i9joUs3k&pf_rd_p=7e7340a8-8768-4798-a0ce-83f879c09110&pf_rd_r=EHJ1BJCAFKMNTAAE92S9&plink=YyblhnzlLvpOFTj1&pageLoadId=6dx1Ey1T2brIF4u9&creativeId=14d6a1c2-a3f8-499b-900a-1ae788c317b1&ref=a_library_t_c5_libItem_B07DM726VJ_21

Some of the BBC series are available on Audible - so all the Peter Whimseys in one place and, maybe not your scene, but all the full cast John Le Carres with the fantastic Simon Russel Beale as narrator/Smiley and Anna Chancellor as his errant wife.

Oh, and have you tried Falco - it's Anton Lesser in the lead role. - another of my fave voices. It' a bit daft - Roman detective/murder mystery - but well done and fun.

There is also a new Sherlock series on Sounds - narrated by Hugh Bonneville - I think 6 episodes, which is okay.

Bodies from the Library

Check out this great listen on Audible.com. This anthology of rare stories of crime and suspense brings together a selection of tales by masters of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction for the first time in book form, including a newly discovered Agatha...

There is a new Charles Paris in sounds - episode 1 so far. Not one I've heard before which is exciting!

I liked Falco as well. Not sold on Sherlock yet....I'll keep trying @CheeseDreamz.

@RubyDarke I am not sure how much I enjoyed the Audible Poirot. I didn't love it, but didn't hate it either..... I wonder if they'll do another.

Thanks for Pilgrim recommendation @ladymalfoy45 - on list to try next.

@LibraryUser thanks so much for flagging the new Charles Paris!
I'm like you, have exhausted some of the BBC sounds options. I listen to quite a few books on BorrowBox, which is free if your local library subscribes to it. Not many of the old classics though

ScottBakula · 28/01/2025 21:13

I love so many of the listed ones.
I really like Charles Paris but for me Bill Nighy can't do much wrong .
I really like him in The Navy Lark .

No Commitments is on bbc sounds atm but for the life of me I can't remember the actress names.

The father brown series with Andrew Sachs is similar to falco and Cadfael.

Philip Madoc playing Cadfael is wonderful he has a soft but powerful voice.
I have earmarked a few books narrated by him on Audible

It's not available on bbc sounds atm but I like Welcome to our village, please invade carefully.
Also not available atm but Marriage lines with Richard Bries and Doctor in the house

There is more but I can't think of them right now.

RoamingGnome · 29/01/2025 20:33

Welcome to Our Village was great! Slightly off piste but I really like vintage space dramas - the Charles Chilton drama on BBC Sounds is good.
No Commitments is on Audible.
Ladies of Letters is entertaining - might be available via your library.
The Val Mcdermid comedy police drama Deadheading on BBC Sounds is available - they don't make it easy to find, need to search by title. Part of a series but that's the only one on Sounds just now.
Worth trawling through 'Drama on 4' as there is quite a variety of stuff there that doesn't seem to be listed in other categories.

DaveWatts · 29/01/2025 20:40

Most of the lives I would recommend have already been suggested but you could try Annika Stranded which I really enjoyed. Not on Audible unfortunately but it was R4 so may be on Sounds at some point. And there are some Ngaio Marsh dramatizations too on Audible which are good.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/02/2025 17:13

Julie Enfield Investigates is currently on Sounds, I think. There were five series made back in the 1990s, starring Imelda Staunton. All a bit weird but I quite like them. It's from just before most people had mobile phones and the internet, which to me always stands out like a sore thumb, as in other ways it sounds recent, unlike the Poirot and Marple series. They also had an Agatha Raisin (sp) thing on not long ago with Penelope Keith. I didn't really take to that. It annoys me that the BBC broadcasts these vintage recordings and then takes them off Sounds within a month. Why not keep them there forever? (Rights issues, I suppose, i.e. money.) I'm afraid in those circumstances I look to see if I can listen via archive.org which has loads of BBC dramatisations.

Thé Beck séries. Free on YouTube

My favourite whilst deep cleaning the shower room.

LadyCrumb · 25/06/2025 19:49

I love McLevy - brilliant cast and about 7 series.

FC78 · 25/06/2025 23:11

@LadyCrumb I was very excited to see a new McLevy on Sounds today but it’s terrible - the previous two series set in the US were fine, if not up to the standard of the previous Leith stories, but this latest one is McLevy by Numbers; spelling everything out, trying to jam in characters for the sake of it, ham fisted retelling of McLevy and Jean Brash’s backstory and terrible accents of a kind I didn’t think were socially acceptable any more. I’m guessing they are trying to cash in on Brian Cox’s fame after Succession to get the US market interested and they’ve felt like they have to dumb it down :(

PS @LibraryUser, lots of great suggestions above but one of my faves is Richard Barton General Practitioner, available on fourble.co.uk. It is a too-short 90s series that gently digs at the terrible 1950s Dick Barton radio plays. The stories are lovely and are worth a listen if only for the wonderful voice of the recently departed Moray Watson.

The recordings of the archive cadfael were dreadful quality when they first arrived - unless they’ve tidied them up.

you can search bbc on audible to get all the “ box sets “ as it were up. There are loads now.
