Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to have a moribund camper van parked indefinitely outside your home, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

Interview with Barry Farimond, aka Ed Grundy, on All About The Archers

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/12/2024 21:03

Sorry, can't get the screenshot not to appear but the big arrow does obliterate most of it.

The fact is that Santa does not have to have a DBS check. It will make not a ha'p'orth of difference that he does not even if he is being called "Krampus".

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/12/2024 22:09

We all know that a DBS check goes out of date as soon as it's done. However, there is value when setting up an event putting small children in contact with a strange man, even with their parents present, in knowing something about him. Mick has only recently arrived in the village and nobody seems to know anything about his background. Many, many predators have got close to children by inveigling themselves into a position of trust. I've never recruited Santas and Elves for a grotto in a department store or similar, but I'd hope they had some sort of background check.

OP posts:
WhitbyBee · 08/12/2024 23:01

He is a security guard- he will have a DBS.

Standard DBS check
A Standard DBS check is suitable for certain roles, such as a security guard. The certificate will contain details of both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings that are held on the Police National Computer, which are not subject to filtering.

Did people listen last night? What do we think of Gavin’s consumptive return?

Nettleteaser101 · 09/12/2024 04:07

Yes Gavin returning and having consumption ( very Dickensian), by the sounds of it was quite exciting considering the story lines so far, wonder what he is up to? Why come back to a place that would hate the sight of you?.
Poor Lynda hope she is ok, Alan was more concerned with Gavin than making sure she was alright.

Bankholidayhelp · 09/12/2024 07:48

It was gavin basically lurking in the dark for Kirsty that gave me wtf . What the heck does he want. If memory serves he was a twat to Kirsty when she was with his dad.

Poor Linda.

Gavin could have written a letter. He didn't have to invade eithers spaces.

The ruddy rev is a a joke (to be honest I thought it was Harrison at first).

RegimentalSturgeon · 09/12/2024 07:54

Poor Lynda hope she is ok

Why wouldn’t she be?

The slave labour was involved in the fire at Grey Gables that left her disfigured.

Nettleteaser101 · 09/12/2024 08:01

Because when she saw Gavin it sounded like she was going to pass out, it put the fear of god in her because of the fire and explosion he was responsible for in the kitchen at Grey Gables and she was burnt and had to be rescued by Ben or Rory,(not sure which), and spend time in hospital and had to be coaxed to get back out into society.

Gonners · 09/12/2024 08:10

It was Freddie who rescued her, wasn't it? (Not that she had any business being in there in the first place.)

EBearhug · 09/12/2024 08:27

It was Freddie, yes.

Brefugee · 09/12/2024 08:50

god Alan is a wet lettuce.

If he really wanted to help Gavin, he should have first gone after Lynda to make sure she was ok, persuade her to go home and hand her over to Robert. Then go back and take Gavin far far away.

And Kirsty should tell the police. (Hoping Lynda does)

(can i get back to the language thing because i've just been tidying my car and thought I'd share one of my favourite German words: gloves. Hand shoes. Would anyone be interested in a Chat thread about our faviourite foreign - to us - words?)

Bruisername · 09/12/2024 09:22

With all these returning criminals it’s feeling more and more like eastenders

the worst thing about Alan is when he angst’s about whether or not he’s doing the right things by supporting the baddie through their hour of need and then justifies it to himself that he is essentially being a good Christian.

Godesstobe · 09/12/2024 09:31

Why on earth didn't Alan look after poor Lynda? I was genuinely upset by her reaction to Gavin after all she went through with the fire at GG. I immediately wanted to comfort her - and I know she's just a fictional character. Alan presumably thinks she is a real person with real feelings. Plus he's a vicar. Plus at that point he didn't know Gavin had consumption. What is wrong with the man?

JoelenesParrot · 09/12/2024 09:37

I know this will be unpopular but I remember developing a bit of a soft spot for Gav. By the end of it, I thought him and Kirsty came to some sort of understanding- and both were victims of Philip in their own way. Gav less than K of course - and it’s right he did time for his role in the business - but he was badly bullied and manipulated by Moss Senior. Gav became quite a nuanced character by the time he was jailed and in another lifetime he could have ended up with Kirsty. But now it seems he has TB and is destined for an early grave.

Thank God K doesn’t have to put up with Philip’s Xmas jumpers and over the top lights this year.

Bruisername · 09/12/2024 09:43

Is the TB a PSA?

I know someone who caught it at the primary school she taught at and gave it to her brother - both fully healthy now 20 odd years later with no recurrence

There's nothing to report, although Harrison might try to run him out of town.

Didn't Gav came to Alice's rescue once?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/12/2024 10:11

Can I just check that I didn't miss this - are you all leaping to the conclusion that because Gavin has a cough that he has TB? I don't recall anybody even mentioning his cough. I was assuming it was just an audible sign that he's one step away from living on the streets. In a TV show they could have signalled this with his clothes and general appearance.

I hope this doesn't lead to another burst of good works from Alan.

OP posts:
JoelenesParrot · 09/12/2024 10:20

The cough was very heavily signposted. I was surprised K didn’t say ‘I don’t like the sound of that cough’. I would have said that within 2 mins of speaking to anyone with a cough like that. If it’s not TB then may be it’s lung cancer. But we have just had Rob’s lingering cancer death so we are prob not due another one just yet.

you know, you can tell your local bobby - especially in Kirsty's position - that someone like him was hanging around in the dark, was literally stalking you online. They can give them a warning.

People don't have to actually break the law for the local community bobby to have a word with them.
