I need a gripping new radio show!

I can run for a long time with something interesting in my headphones, but I need something new! I prefer radio drama or comedy to music.

I have listened to every episode of Cabin Pressure about 10 times! I've recently listened to Michelle Obama's autobiography, Rob Delaney's book about his son that died and binge-listened to every season of "Lifelines" over a week. Loved, loved, loved Lifelines.

I'm training for a 10K - I need more radio to download from BBC sounds - any recommendations? A good Book of the Week? A fascinating Dessert Island Discs?

Home front

Old Harry's Game is free to listen on BBC Sounds. It gets better from series 2 when scumspawn joins as a character. For thrillers, I highly recommend The Lovecraft Investigations on BBC Sounds. Start with The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Incredible thriller with supernatural elements.

Series 9 of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme. It's story of a family told backwards. Genuinely funny, such a good listen

Did you ever get into Mark Evan's "Bleak Expectations"? That is still on BBC sounds.

I was going to recommend Hut 33, but you might have to pay for it.

I'd love to download stuff from BBCSounds, but whatever I choose doesn't have an option to download?

Can anyone help with this - got a looong flight coming up soon!

YouTube instructions always show a download button, but I only ever see "subscribe" and "share".

I'm not in the UK but as far as I am aware radio downloads aren't restricted in any way.

Sorry for derailing....

MarinatemysoulinSprite · 17/05/2023 15:53

Thanks @Madcats

I'll only have my phone as an option so transferring it to another device isn't going to work :-(

Any recommendations for a nice (R4 - type) drama that isn't via Sounds?

I loved Paradise and Finding Kevin Parle.

And the drama with Anton Lesser where he's sleuthing around in ancient Rome. I could listen to Anton Lesser all day.

Another vote for Bleak Expectations- I can only find two episodes on BBC sounds but the whole lot is on YouTube

SleazyLizzard · 17/05/2023 17:15

BBC Radio programs cannot be downloaded to listen to later if you are out of the country. I found this out when living abroad. Sure you can listen to BBC Sounds but no downloads.

Nothing will ever better Cabin Pressure, but I also really liked Deep Trouble (with Ben Wilbond of Horrible Histories and Ghosts). Set onboard a submarine.

Snorklette · 12/08/2023 11:46

Oh, and second Old Harry’s Game too !

peasandpetals · 12/08/2023 12:06

Thanks to all for these suggestions

Costacoffeeplease · 12/08/2023 12:16

Home Front is a long series covering the First World War, concentrating on a few families and their experiences.

CallieQ · 12/08/2023 19:31

The Archers!

Time40 · 12/08/2023 20:05

Conversations From A Long Marriage - Oh god, I absolutely loathe and detest that thing, with a passion!

A second vote from me for Disaster Trolls, and for everything made by the wonderful Danny Robbins - The Battersea Poltergeist, The Witch Farm, and Uncanny.

I've just finished The Crossbow Killer, which is a fascinating and haunting true-crime podcast about a horrible murder in Wales.

Some (far fetched but entertaining) fiction options: the ads annoy me!
aftershock
alice isn’t dead
homecoming
blackout
ear hustle
passenger list

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 27/11/2023 21:51

Absolutely love Cabin Pressure too.

Have you tried Sideways? Not funny but usually interesting. Try Episode 37, My Last 5p. It's such an incredible story.
