Can be hit or miss but for me it's one of the best comedy programmes currently running on Radio 4. (Still beaten by Gloomsbury of course.)

Thank you! I'm so happy. Love the series and love the relationship between the characters. And love Roger Allam's voice. Will save it to listen to when I'm alone and can really enjoy it. Can't wait!

Bloody love this! Thank you!

I like this series but I finding it slightly depressing.

Their whole lives seem to revolve around accusing each other of infidelity or trying to make one another jealous.

How are you finding it?

I’m only up to series 3

I adore Gloomsbury! Do you know the background of the Bloomsbury Set, and the life of Vita Sackville-West? Only asking because I wonder if the programme works for someone who doesn't....

In two minds re Conversations - I don't like Roger Allam's delivery; sounds so scripted.

nauticant · 03/03/2023 10:16

Yes, I'm familiar with the Bloomsbury Set and Vita in particular, and the milieu generally, and that adds a lot to my enjoyment. I'm not sure what I'd think about Gloomsbury without background knowledge.

I get why people would have doubts about Conversations but Radio 4 comedy is, to my mind, in such a long trough that I'll take something decent.

I'm not getting on with the angsty tone that this programme has taken of late.

It started as sharply written and sparky but is now evolving into mawkish mini-dramas. Shame.

First three series were, for me, brilliant! Very funny and yet edgy at times. Series four is...well, it passes the miles on the motorway way but should be the last before the ideas run out. Some of the script has been a bit clunky; even for the talents of Alum and Lumley.

Hollyhocksandlarkspur · 23/03/2023 21:45

Great for long boring car journeys and DH and I spend a lot of time chortling in self recognition. Love the one about waving off guests.

Coxspurplepippin · 23/03/2023 23:42

Siegfried Sassoon, Memoirs of an Infantry Officer.
Vera Brittain, Testament of Youth.
Robert Graves, Goodbye to All That.
A Month in the Country, JL Carr (set after the war - a beautiful book, shame it's not more widely known)

Oops - wrong thread!

Well this is embarrassing; series four has been my favourite of them all! 🙈
