Any fans?

It's in the comedy section on BBC Sounds - but it's not really a comedy. Mrs. Rudd and her piano. The school secretary sorting everything out.

New things coming in like the National Curriculum, SATs.

Seemingly very well behaved children.

I do enjoy listening to it - anyone else?

Oooooh I remember this! It was in the 6:30 slot (ie our teatime)

There was a lot of moaning about "County Hall" Grin

One of the young hip teachers wanted to do a different "nativity" because Nobody Rides a Donkey nowadays, but one of the children said "my uncle does! - in India".

I used to listen when it was on the Radio 4 6.30 slot a few years ago but it seemed very old fashioned then. Maybe because I was a teacher at the time it didn't ring true.

Very old fashioned

It was set in the 80s and early 90s then a later version set in the 2000s

One of the episodes was about a girl playing in the boy's football squad - and how County Hall and the other schools objected,

Ah! I might have missed that it was meant to be retro. I started teaching in the early 80s and it still came across as out of date albeit not enough to be a period piece.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/03/2022 13:25

I had my ILEA teaching job interview at County Hall. Happy days.

Oh I loved this when it first came out and I live listening to re runs.

I came home from school at lunchtime to listen to it. Sad?

I like that it’s “old fashioned” as it’s useful to remember it was contemporary and not that long ago really. How fa we’ve come in some areas and not in others.

I’ve always found the actor Karl Howman to be irritating though. I don’t understandings love. He has over enunciated in everything I’ve seen him in.

NewYearCalavicci · 26/03/2022 17:59

I love this show , yes it is a bit lot dated but I dont mind ,
I agree with @camdenisham regarding the way Karl howman speaks but I like this about him , I am sick of not been able to understand what people are saying on tv and radio

I likes him in Brush Strokes too

Mr Beaston always had time for all of the staff and kids , even the annoying Mrs Rudd

I love this show it’s a real comfort listen . I wake every night about 3 ish and find I can drop off to sleep listening to this, the bonus is if I don’t sleep I enjoy the different voices and story lines.

The different voices make it easy to tell which character is talking, a lesson that whoever casts actors from the archers could learn from.

In the episode I caught this week, teachers were complaining about excessive paperwork following the introduction of the National curriculum and 'Baker' days, and in the run up to the first set of statutory assessments.
I found myself thinking 'You have no idea!!' Just wait and see what the paperwork grows into...

I used to enjoy this, but even in the 1980s I knew it was very old-fashioned. My mum was a primary school teacher until she retired in the mid 80s and as far back as I can recall all her colleagues except the Head were on first name terms with each other (except in front of the children, obviously). In KSJ they all refer to each other even in the staffroom as Mrs or Miss this and Mr that! Surely not.
