Noooo! Nish Kumar is the new chair of the News Quiz <sobs>

Ok so maybe I'm overreacting slightly but I am so disappointed that they've gone with Nish as the new chair. What a crashing step down from Miles Jupp.

Any of the regular panelists would've been better. Bah... What the hell is going on at R4 these days? They're losing the plot.

Why do people object to Nish? Surely it’s not because he is.........trails off........

Because he is not funny, has a high opinion of himself and is aiming for eventual national treasure status- I don't like him for exactly the same reasons I don't like Sue Calman, Sandi Toksvig and just about every one on The Now Show.

KingscoteStaff · 01/02/2020 00:03

Urgh he was so smugly smug this evening. Andy Zaltzman was superb - I wish they’d give him the chairman gig.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/02/2020 00:17

I want to like Nish Kumar but I find him a bit leaden. I still miss Sandi, it always felt like she was really enjoying herself, Nish feels like he's trying his best to make a good impression and not really feeling comfortable and amused.

When they were doing the changing chair last series I was surprised that my favourite out of all of them was Andrew Maxwell. I generally find him only mildly amusing but he was well able to riff off the panel and didn't give a fuck about making a good impression. He's also slightly bitter and cynical, which is invariably a positive for a comedian and host of the News Quiz IMO.

I hope they still have Hugo Rifkind on the panel sometimes, even though he was mostly there to comment on Brexit. Although there will probably still be some comedic milage left in Brexit. I still miss Jeremy Hardy so much, he could tear a pompous politician or a ridiculous policy to shreds in just a few rib-achingly funny sentences. There was no-one else like him.

PickAChew · 01/02/2020 00:21

Nish is lovely.

Miles never shook off balamorey for me.

funmummy48 · 01/02/2020 00:25

@BlackAmericanNoSugar I too miss Jeremy Hardy. I just loved his rants! I'm not a fan of Nish Kumar, he's just a bit too fond of the sound of his own voice.

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 01/02/2020 00:28

I love Nish. 😍

Justajot · 01/02/2020 00:32

I like Miles Jupp's voice - it's sort of soothing. Nish Kumar is a bit squeaky in comparison.

KingscoteStaff · 01/02/2020 03:24

Squeaky, yet shouty...

Gone2far · 01/02/2020 10:23

NK is a smug twat , who thinks he's hilarious but is not funny. Ever. IMO. So a perfect fit for Radio 4.
Mind you, I feel the same about all R4 'comedians'. I used to love David Mitchell, but, after hearing him on The Naked Truth, I just feel like giving him a slap.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/02/2020 10:30

Yes everyone must like all members of minority ethnicities or they are racist.

I love Nish but it's surely obvious why his comedy style and personality would irritate some.

We should save implying people are racist for, you know, when people are actually being racist.

Back to the point: I was slightly skeptical about him in the chair but I think it's been good so far.

TurduckenFucken · 01/02/2020 10:36

Noooooo! He just isn’t funny. He’s a horrible mixture of simpering and trying too hard. He makes me uncomfortable.

I would have preferred:
Rachel Parris
Neil Delamere
Guz Khan
David O’Doherty
Joe Lycett

whataboutbob · 02/02/2020 16:38

I find him glib and not funny. He’s like a hyperactive kid at a party who wants all the cake and all the attention. His “ tribute” to Nicholas Parsons at the end of Friday’s programme was a case in point as he galloped insincerely through a few hackneyed sentences. I would have loved David O’ Doherty. In an ideal world Miles Jupp would be lured away from Wales and back to the recording studio.

KingscoteStaff · 02/02/2020 17:47

Couldn’t agree more with the Nicholas Parsons ‘tribute’ - ghastly and embarrassing - if he’d never heard of him or didn’t rate him, let someone else say something.

Oulu · 04/02/2020 10:27

I think he'd be OK if it wasn't for the slightly frantic, shouty, high-pitched laugh which is really getting on my nerves. It reminds me of what happens when a group of adolescent boys get together - they're desperate to show how witty they are, they don't really understand their mate's humour (mostly because it isn't funny), but they have to laugh REALLY LOUDLY in case their mates twig.

Silvercatowner · 08/02/2020 21:13

What is he????

I haven't enjoyed other stuff he's been in but he was OK on the News Quiz. Not as good as Miles though.

echt · 29/02/2020 20:23

I thought he was fine until the last episode, when he twice loudly cut across two of the guests when they speaking. Women, of course. Hmm

SuckingDieselFella · 29/02/2020 20:29

He is really unfunny. Very obvious targets dealt with in a very obvious way. Like an A Level politics student performing in the sixth form common room.

Plus, he has an ego bigger than the planet.

Sizeablecontours · 29/02/2020 20:33

Oh no, I love Miles Jupp.

I stopped listening last year though because I was always hoping he was going to chair, and it was very often a different guest presenter. Got fed up with it.
