Is it only me ? ("The Listening Project")

Is it only me, still getting annoyed, that they cut into other shows (such as Feedback) to grab 5 minutes, here and there, for TLP ?

Don't get me wrong, TLP has some great items within, and I am not saying anything like "scrap it" but surely they could steal 5 minutes from "Today" at 08:54 and there is the weekly Omnibus broadcast anyway...

It has already taken over 150 hours of broadcasting time (they celebrated 1000th piece recently)... They could just do the 15 minutes on Sunday and not call it an omnibus, and give back 3x 5 minutes to the other shows.

Personally, I feel Feedback should be on year round, because there are comments (good and bad) from listeners every week, I have no doubt... When you take into account 6 shows in a series, then 6x 5 min = 30 minutes, that means that they have, in effects, cut Feedback from 6 to 5 shows in a series,to provide the time for TLP

Don't like TLP. Sometimes listen but usually switch off.

I was gratified to find this thread still getting new comments.

How about this suggestion then - what if R4 would KEEP TLP but only broadcast the Sunday version (and not call it an omnibus)...

It would halve the minutes it was on, but all be in one show that could be enjoyed or avoided by listeners.

It would

a) allow shows that have been cut short to be full length again, and thus accommodate those who are annoyed by that aspect,

b) reduce airtime so those who absolutely hate it can be partially satisfied in losing some of what they may consider 'drove;'

c) for those who like TLP, it would not have been killed off, just available in a single chunk,

*Any support for such a compromise ?(

Yes. Horrendous. Sickly. Saccharine. BBC social programming/propaganda at its worst. Almost all tbe same type of weary tedious introspection pretending to be deep and tboughtful.

Coppersulphate · 21/01/2019 18:17

I hate it.

Urwotu8t · 21/01/2019 19:17

In our house it's called 'For fucks sake can you switch off that drivel'

I really really hate it.

Cant stand TLP for all the reasons stated above plus Im just sick of hearing pointless drivel like ‘when Tony met Carol over tea and cake at the local cafe and they bonded over their love of ginger spice and their struggle with the allotment.’ It annoys me when they cut into serious programs and the music irritates me too.

As for Thought for the Day, again, the same drivel every day. The priest, Vicar, Bishop, Minister etc.. picks a news item and then selects a section from the Bible which is meant to have a parallel theme but often doesn't and is just used to (lecture) remind us that we should be kind/good/humble/generous/meek etc. Pointless.

A lot annoys me about Radio4 at the moment. I’m just so tired of hearing the same old same old. Why do we never hear any working class voices or people from the Midlands or Ireland/Scotland?

I did enjoy the Arnold Bennet program on Saturday though. Shame there were no Midland/Stoke/Potteries accents to add authenticity.

I used to adore FG on R5 but TLP makes my teeth itch.

MikeUniformMike · 19/02/2019 13:07

I noticed the lack of accents in the Arnold Bennett thing too.
I think the problem is that people just don't know where that part of the country is. The same goes for Shropshire and to some degree Cheshire.

The potteries accent is distinct.
It was like listening to a play about Liverpool without Scouse accents.

Exactly. I could hear that an attempt had been made to find actors with regional accents but to me, those with broad accents sounded as if they came from Lancashire and Yorkshire. my grandfather was born in Stoke in 1890 and I remember him speaking ‘potteries’ so I’d imagine his accent would have been a true representation of the voices heard in the Potteries during the period in which the play was set.

It reminded me of another Radio4 play from last year set mostly in Italy where most of the cast spoke with broad Northern (English) accents.

I think the BBC needs to extend its stand by actor list as they seem to use the same people for everything.
