I'm looking for inspiration, please. I've worked my way through all of No Such Thing As A Fish with the QI Elves, and I'm waiting very impatiently for the next episode of Serial. So, what are you listening to that you recommend?

If anyone liked Serial, Missing Maura Murray is another true crime series I'm just getting into which looks promising

Another vote for Freakonomics. I also love Happier with Gretchen Rubin and her sister.

I've enjoyed Serial and S Town too.

On a regular basis I listen to:
Longest Shortest Time - about various aspects of parenting. Really good.
This American Life - bit hit and miss
Boagworld - good if you're interested in web development

Also enjoy the following R4 podcasts:
Desert Island Discs
The Archers
Bookclub
Intrigue: Murder in the Lucky Holiday Hotel

Seriously
Boston Calling
From Our Own Correspondent
Comedy of the Week & Friday Night Comedy & Newsjack
Crossing Continents
More or Less
In Our Time - you can subscribe to the whole thing or just particular topics, e.g. philosophy, science, history. I've actually gone off it a bit but it's still ok.

All of them are Radio 4 (Newsjack is 4Extra) except Seriously, which is still produced by the BBC but not broadcast on air, it's podcast only.

If I'd known TED talks and Infinite Monkey Cage were available I'd have loved those too, I always like them when I catch them on air.

averythinline - I used to download podcasts from BBC I-player onto my laptop and then transfer them via a usb cable to my mp3 player or phone.
I did that for a few years and only found out last year what a ridiculously long winded way of doing things that is.

I now use an app on my phone called Podcast Republic (I'm on android too). I find it great and really easy to use, but there are plenty of podcast apps in the playstore to choose from.

I still listen to my Radio 4 favourites but have also discovered lots of other podcasts that I subscribe to including:
1A
99% invisible
Benjamen Walker's theory of everything
Can he do that?
Embedded
Eye of the Storm
Freakonomics Radio
Hidden Brain
Invisibilia
Outside/In
Radiolab
Stuff you should know
The allusionist
The comedian's comedian
The memory palace
The mortified podcast
The moth
This American life
Unjustly maligned

I used to listen to No Such Thing As A Fish but I became increasingly frustrated at the number of inaccuracies and downright bluffing. Particularly, the presenters have an annoying habit of stating that 'no one knows' the reason for something that they just haven't bothered to research properly. I ended up shouting 'I KNOW!' so many times that I've unsubscribed in disgust.

On a slightly less esoteric note, tell me I'm not the only fan of the Barry and Angelos Show?
Ridiculous and random ramblings with preposterous plots.
Very much reminds me of the old Peter Cook and Dudley Moore recordings.

The Archers Omnibus. I never listen in real time, I'd never keep up. But I keep them stacked up and then listen when I'm doing something mindless such as washing the car, ironing or gardening. I've tried just sitting in an armchair and listening but it just doesn't work because I can't sit still and listen for that long. I've tried listening while driving long distances, but it's too difficult to concentrate on both and I miss bits of the plot.

Also Desert Island Discs. It's amazing what people will reveal about themselves in such an intimate setting. And people you've never heard of can turn out to be the most fascinating characters.

I must have missed an awful lot of good listening before podcasts were invented

Have people been listening to Monkey Tennis? It's an Alan Partridge podcast and I've just discovered it and binged on it in the last week.

Sorry to sound stupid but what exactly is a podcast? Do you get it on your laptop or ipad (don't use a phone for anything other than phoning or texting).

Do you need headphones, do you need to join a club of some kind or are they more like you tube stuff.

I am specifcally looking for something to help me sleep.

For those who like Serial - the podcast grossly misrepresented the truth including dismissing the dating violence that Hae Min Lee was subjected to - Adnan is guilty - the trial transcripts show that very clearly
