Leonie and James' book

This book is troubling me. It is supposed to be one of TA's awful 'comedy' moments. The dreadful urbanite pair are trying to chronicle a year in the life of Ambridge. They are townies, haven't got a clue and have no connection with rural affairs. They are blundering about in their quest for copy, offending people, being insensitive with their condescending attitude to (what they see as) a quaint, bygone way of life.

BUT ...

Aren't we, the listeners, mostly Leonies and Jameses, with our regular seven o'clock slot being the equivalent of the book? Are the scriptwriters essentially laughing at their audience?
