Just curious... religion on radio...

Personally I'm not religious. Others are welcome to hold pretty much any views they wish (though I draw the line at anything needing sacrifices of living things, whatever their method [such as forcing a donkey off a tower], or those who might be said to worship Satan).

I don't listen to Today very often - partly because of the loss of Edward Stourton, but mostly because of the presenters and 'stopwatch radio' (having to fit in sport etc etc and darn trailers, even if the time allowed for the weather is severely cut).

However, I do consider there are rather a lot of religious programmes and while that list includes a lot of local or regional stations, it strikes me as awkward to 'get away from it'.

We don't hear "Thought for the day" spots any time after 09:00, but if I am listening at say 02:30 on R2, there will be some pre-recorded spot (repeated an hour later), and this being Sunday, both R2 and R4 will carry religious material in place of news or music free of any religious influence.

I just wonder whether others would 'miss' these items, or am I the only one able to admit to not being interested ?

If you find the material interesting / inspiring, is it the case that you simply cannot get to a place of worship, or that (apart from perhaps Christmas and Easter, you generally don't go), or do you go to some service every week ?

Feel free to 'shoot me down in flames' if you wish, for being a non-believer, or because you don't consider any of these items to be irritating. (I do sometimes use the time to get a fresh cup of tea, etc, but really do wonder whether there's any strong/ good reason for inflicting these short pieces (on R2, for example) on people up all night, while many others sleep right through...

Are those "up all night" more likely to be sinners in need of spiritual guidance ? :)

I find 'Thought of the Day' quite cosy and comforting. I also think they seem to have a pretty good selection of faiths, so lots of different view points.

I am totally not a believer but I think I would miss it.

Ah, that's perhaps more varied (though I usually sleep through Today, day after day, as I get more cheery folk on local (English) stations (R Wales comes from the other end of the Principality, and I don't consider it local compared with R Shropshire or R Stoke).

Ambivalent to them but I suppose it keeps them in the Shires happy.

As long as it is not the thin end of the wedge that will lead to Creationism being taught in schools.
