Trallers · 19/01/2026 03:44

Well I got 1341 in a pathetic 340 guesses, although it was my first ever go (off the back of seeing this thread in active and wondering what it was). Hopefully a better score tomorrow as I have a better idea of how to play.

InMySpareTime · 19/01/2026 06:36

@Trallers it takes a while to see the patterns in formatting and word lengths, and that saves a lot of guesses.
If you click on a blank word in an unfinished puzzle, a number appears in the blank space. That’s the length of that word. Get an idea of the sorts of filler words that appear at the starting sentence of Wikipedia articles (in, a, the, is, was etc) and you can often “see” them without explicitly using guesses.
Brackets in the first sentence containing two sets of three words separated by a dash means you’re looking for an article about a person.
Superscript (word boxes above the text line) usually means something mathematical or pertaining to the area of something geographical.
Subscript usually means a chemical of some kind, especially if there are a few with lots of one and two letter words.

Ooh thank you, those are very useful tips!

If you search the same word again I'm assuming it doesn't count it twice?

InMySpareTime · 19/01/2026 14:33

@Trallersit doesn’t count it twice, and some root words fill in other words and plurals automatically without adding guesses.
”be” reveals be, is, was
”it” reveals it, they, he, she, its
“do” reveals do, does, doing, did
(I think those are correct but can’t remember exactly the extent of the root word power and it depends which words are in the bit of the article).
