Pushchair solution for large 2yr old and baby

I'm expecting number 2 in August when number 1 will be 2 1/4 years old. However, he's big for his age (over 15kg and about 92cm)so doesn't fit most tandems or bolt-on seats (weight limit 15kg or 3 yrs on most), but don't think he'll be up to walking all the time! Live in London so I use buses alot - don't want a double as will have problems getting into buses, shops, house, etc. Am thinking about a sling for baby, but concerned I'll have chronic back ache. Are there any suitable pushchairs out there, as all I can see is Phil & Ted, which I'm not keen on for a new born?
Thanks

What i did with the newborn and toddler phil and teds was to buy the car seat adapter, put the newborn in the car seat and the toddler in the seat below.
Nobody will recommend that and you must never let go of the pram or it will topple over but it worked for us, we rarely went out for more than 2 hours a day and I took the new baby out of the car seat at every opportunity.

An i-Candy maybe. A friend of mine had on for her two with a similar gap.

I got a P&T and love it.

flowerybeanbag · 26/05/2010 20:24

Why are you not keen on the P&T for a newborn? We have a Vibe which is fantastic.

MagnusCat · 27/05/2010 16:43

Thanks all.

Flowerybeanbag: the newborn bit for a P&T looks so close to the ground, and they can only see you walking right behind them - I knew someone who had one and the baby never seemed that happy. But then, maybe it was the baby, not the pram...?

Do you find the child at the back of your P&T can see enough, doesn't get frustrated at being at the back?

I'll have a look at i-Candy too, andthe P&T carseat adaptor (though I use the pushchair everyday, and to go food shopping, so it sounds like not such a good option for us if it may fall over).

I worried about the newborn not being able to see much in the P&T but decided that as newborns spend most of their time in buggies asleep and as they can still see you, that it would be OK for the first 6 months until she could sit up.

She's just about to go into the doubles seat full time now and on the times we've used it so far, she's been able to see plenty and seemed happy to be in there. I've even bought one of those car seat toys to attach to the back of the seat in front to give her something to look at and play with. I was actually surprised about how much could be seen out of the sides too.

Never worried about her being too close to the ground though. She's well protected by the frame, her brother sat in front of her and me stood behind so it didn't seem like an issue to me.

As GoldenSnitch says, tiny babies spend most of their time asleep anyway. As it happened DS2 was enormous so was in the doubles seat from almost 4mo. We attached a toy, he can see out the sides and in the Vibe, the doubles seat reclines anyway, to about the angle of his bouncy chair so I wasn't too worried about him not being absolutely flat.

trouble is, when you've got to accommodate two, you just have to compromise on something.

BottersnikesandGumbles · 29/05/2010 11:34

The Sport doubles seat reclines too. It's only the older E3 seats that don't. Like flowery's seat, once reclined, it's about as laid back as DD's bouncy chair.

have you had a look at the new city jogger twin select??

ooosabeauta · 04/06/2010 14:34

MagnusCat do you mind me asking what your solution has been (if there is one yet)? I'm in a similar position, ds will be 2, is 90cm and over 13kg which the shop has told me is max. weight for every double they stock apart from the Phil&Ted's which I don't like (although I know lots of others do). Have you found a good compromise?

MagnusCat · 08/06/2010 17:24

No, I haven't found a solution. I'm thinking of using a sling for the first few weeks, and put the baby in the pushchair lying flat whenever possible, eg when 2 yr old wants to walk, or at playgroups. But I'm concerned I'll get a bad back, and the baby is likely to be quite large anyway. I'll see how it goes, then may have to get a pushchair anyway.

I might just have to get a Phil & Ted, even though I don't like them much, especially for the young baby.

I looked at iCandy pushchairs, which say suitable up to 3 years. I emailed them, and 3 years is defined as 15-20 kg.

I'll let you know if I find anything better. Good luck in your search too.

Thanks for your advice on P&T. I didn't know the seats can be reclined, so I'll have another look. I think I'll probably end up with one. Good to know that you don't think there's an issue with proximity to the ground either.

Thanks all

Just to let you know, I've bought a Phil & Ted on Ebay. I've seen a couple of P&T recently that people I know have, and have quizzed them on them. A couple of people have told me that to use a pushchair for the toddler and a sling for the baby is hard work, and kills your back.

Thanks for all your comments.

we have a Phil & Ted and a tall toddler (2.8 years) and I can't get the hood up or the rain cover on in the newborn/toddler set up
