Get a Maclaren serviced or just give up and buy a new one?

Has anyone had a Maclaren serviced?
DD has a lovely Maclaren (a Lulu Guinness 'Life is a Bed of Roses' one) but it's absolutely knackered. Wheels are worn right down, rain hood is torn, brakes are broken, and now the buckle of the safety harness is broken too.
A friend said she got her Maclaren fully serviced for £30 but I can't find anywhere near me that does this. And it also involved the buggy being sent off for 2 weeks and I'm not sure I could cope without it for that long.
DD is 2 so I don't want to spend loads on either getting it fixed or getting a new one.
I've seen an ok looking Mamas and Papas one at Argos for £40.
So, do I buy a new one or do I get the old one fixed?
Anyone got any experience of getting them serviced? Where did you go? How much did it cost? How long did it take?

I was quoted £40 to replace four wheels, both wheel housings both axles and both shock absorbers
I sold mine on ebay and bought a new one in the sale at boots

I know it's more eco to mend....just can't find anywhere that does it!
If I get a new one (which I'm seriously thinking about doing today) I'll probably ebay old one. Do you want me to let you know if I ebay it missdee? I'll probably just sell it off cheap if you're interested. The covers are still in really good nick. It's just the breaks, wheels, rainhood etc that are knackered.
misdee · 27/02/2010 13:46
that would be great. as love to keep spare covers when other are in the wash
kellyatbabyguds · 27/02/2010 13:47
Have a look at the Maclaren website to see if they have service agent any where near you and what they would charge. As an approved service agaent they should also loan you a pushchair so that you are not without while they repair.
RamblingRosa · 27/02/2010 13:58
Will do missdee. You're very organised having spare covers while you wash the old ones. I didn't even know you could wash them
Thanks for that Kelly. According to the Maclaren website there's only one near me and I've already been there. It's a weird shop (not what you imagine an official Maclaren service place to look like) I don't think they even stock Maclarens . The woman said she could sell me wheels for £8 each but she couldn't service it. Maybe I should go back and try again.
kellyatbabyguds · 27/02/2010 15:00
Try them again and if you have no joy ring maclaren and explain as we have guidleines to stick to regarding becoming a service agent. The service agents are normally just independent stores that have been trained at Maclarens head office.

Do mothercare do it as agents? or am I imagining that? We got given a fairly knackered Maclaren, would love to get it serviced.
RamblingRosa · 27/02/2010 20:00
Apparently Mothercare do. Not sure if it's all branches. My friend got hers done via Mothercare but had to have it sent off for about 2 weeks.
I'm afraid to say I did the environmentally unfriendly thing this afternoon and went and bought a new buggy . It's a £40 Mamas and Papas one and I have to see it actually seems loads better than the (far more expensive) Maclaren.
Anyway, thanks for tips. I'll put the old Maclaren on ebay or sell it on mumsnet or freecycle it or something so it won't be going to landfill.

'John Lewis' offered to organise a service for my 5 year old Techno XT but said it would be over £100 to make it worthwhile. I bought a new one on offer in Mothercare and my Mum just uses the old one.
