a rear facing, small folding pushchair for holiday?

I want to start looking out from now for a rear facing pushchair that folds down as small as poss. This is for an august holiday so am hoping that with plenty of time to look I will find a good used price. What should I be looking out for? [clueless]
And is ebay/gumtree the best place to look these days?

Welcome to the madhouse. I'm not sure such a buggy exists. I've been looking for one as well.
Came up with the Bugaboo Bee, Inglesina Zippy and Mamas and Papas Mylo. The Mylo is new out and costs nearly £700. There's a new Bee coming out next month (the Bee Plus), about £450 that looks like a good option. These all fold with the seat attached in the rear-facing position.
Others I've found will fold with the seat attached, but only if it is turned to face forwards (eg. Mamas & Papas Urbo £295).

The Loola Up folds with the seat rear facing. Tis quite heavy, but I love mine, and DS certainly seems to (out like a light in minutes!)

feedingatoddler · 16/02/2010 19:03

Loola Up is good, but not really suitable for holiday as it's quite chunky. It does fold smaller than other from-birth pushchairs though. It depends how you are travelling really.

How do you feel about a bit of a retro pushchair? If you have until August you could probably pick up a Maclaren Superdreamer or a Silver Cross Wayfarer on ebay.

I wrote a long post last night but it seems it never appeared. Ah well - the gist of it was:

  • is it difficult or just a pain to remove the seat before folding on those, tabitha8?
  • does the loola fold quite compactly, to keep the airline happy? and to fit in to what will probably be a small boot on a hire car?
  • liked the idea of retro, feedingatoddler, and went looking at them. They're sort of cute in a way but probably not a compact fold?

what do you think of the BRITAX Strider?

We took the loola on holiday last year, folds up small and fits neatly into the boot of our car. Dd2 was a bit big for it really (2.5 years old) but it did the job. I managed to pick one up at a boot-sale for 15.00 and sold it after for 50.00 .

These are really hard to find, but Chicco do some, not sure about prices etc, but I've seen this one in action and the parents said it was very light weight and easy to fold etc.

I found a sling the most versatile way to carry/transport a baby when on holiday, great for the airport and on the plane, and in some countries the pavements aren't very smooth so aren't compatible with strollers etc.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 17/02/2010 09:25

oh what a luckt find, marne

greenmonkies - will look up the chicco now. I actually wear ds2 most of the time and have a few slings (although I maninly use a pouch sling these days for quick in-and-outs and hip carries - he's 'that age'!!). I justfeel like I am going to need the extra relief support of a pram for hot sweaty days and evening strolling.

The seat unit on the Urbo is easy enough to remove and reverse, Wellies. As I'm looking for something to take on a bus, it wouldn't have suited my needs. Also, I want something that weighs a little less .

WelliesAndPyjamas · 18/02/2010 15:04

Thanks tabitha8.

Still browsing when I get a chance - there's a lot of them out there... but the ones that tick all my boxes are so expensive, even used! Will keep looking...

Imagine the money that could be made from retailing a stroller that folds small and faces both ways but with a budget price. I know I'd buy one.

Wellies I was worried about heat/sweat too when we took DD1 to Turkey (in August!) when she was nearly 2. We got us a cheap stroller to take with us, but to be honest we still used the sling more, and I was amazed that we didn't get very sweaty in it, even though it was so hot even the locals were saying it was a heatwave! She still preferred it to the stroller!

horsemadgal · 19/02/2010 12:48

Britax Strider is massive.
I'd say a Bee but expensive for a holiday.
Jane do rear facer now, Solo Reverse I think it's called.
Does it really have to be rear-facing?

WelliesAndPyjamas · 19/02/2010 15:00

sweet pics, greenmonkies
I took slings last year (same place) and regretted it and he is of course heavier this year - and the plan is to spend more time strolling and out and about this year (DH has promised! last year we had to do a lot of work on our house out there and it was not a typical holiday!). Luckily he settles down nicely to sleep as soon as he is put in to a pram so am hoping he'll be adjustable and give me breaks (hoping those words don't come back to haunt me!).

horsemagdal - will look up the jane. Thanks. I do really prefer it to be rear-facing - it's just my 'thing'

My friend is selling a babystyle s3d for 150 including carrycot and car seat. Not sure if that is a similar model to the one you mentioned it's a cream colour and looks lovely.
