Twin buggy - cheap as poss!

Hi. I'm looking for a twin (side by side) buggy to accomodate a large two year old and a nine month old. I'd really like it if the nine month old's seat could be parent facing and the two year old's front facing. I'd also like not to have spend a fortune on it! Any suggestions most welcome.

Bump. Any advice on double buggies please?

Don't think you would get one rear and forward facing cheap sorry.

New you could get one for under £100 a Cosatto side by side or something, have a look at kiddicare.com

There's always loads going cheap on ebay if you are OK with second hand or gumtree or local free ads.

this one is only £100 and can be used from birth. I have one and it is pretty sturdy and folds down small.

You probably won't get a cheap one where the little one faces you they because those sort are newer styles so maybe not a lot on ebay second hand.

Mine have been facing away from me in the pram since 6mo and they have survived and are very chatty. Not sure why there's such a big thing about kids facing you in the pram.

FreddoBaggyMac · 28/01/2010 14:01

that Redkite one looks good neenz - thanks. I Had been considering a maclaren if I was going for the forward facing option.
You've both confirmed my suspicions, I doubted whether there'd be a cheapie parent facing one but thought it was worth seeking mumsnet expertise just in case! My single buggy is parent facing and I love it - it's great being able to chat to my baby! I vowed I'd never buy another forward facing one, but we're moving house soon and my 2 y.o will struggle with the long walk to school and back so I wanted to get a cheap double to last for the next six months to a year (I've had bad experiences with buggy boards!) I'll probably have to end up going for the forward facing option then, but am going to resent using it often when I could be chatting to the baby if I used the single

first wheels city twin seems to be the cheapest I can find to fit my description... not exactly cheap but I might consider it as hopefully I'd get a lot of the money back if i sold it on ebay... I'll have a look for 2nd hand ones too. Please let me know if you know of anything less expensive!

cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-FIRST-WHEELS-CITY-TWIN-DOUBLE-PUSHCHAIR-STROLLER_W0QQitemZ190366832024QQcmdZViewI temQQptZUKBabyTwins_RL?hash=item2c52bf5598 - seems quite a good price for a new one here... although the colour looks a bit dubious from the picture, would be black after one use with my little boy

Yeah that is not a bad price - but I wouldn't pay it just to have the LO facing me... but that's just me, I didn't have that option when the twins were born (although did have a carrycot facing me for first 4mths) so facing away is fine with me.

It depends how much money you have to spend and how much storage space you have (first wheels won't fold down very small)

FreddoBaggyMac · 28/01/2010 16:11

Don't mind it not folding small and I won't need it for the car so that's fine about it not folding. I've also seen it in red on ebay for £295 which is probably a bit more of a practical colour, and I'm thinking I should be able to re-sell it in six to 12 months for £200ish which makes the cost seem not too bad... will have to see if DH agrees! would ideally like a smaller outlay though, I don't see why you have to pay so much extra for parent facing seats!

It's the sturdyness I think - for a proper double buggy eg mountain buggy twin, the seats face away and they are still £600. But it is a very good make.

The umbrella folds are cheaper to make so cheaper to buy but you have to compromise on the baby facing you cos of the design.

I wouldn't count on getting more than half what you paid on ebay - MBs rarely go for more than £100, people want a bargain.

Have you seen any second hand ones on ebay?

shatteredmumof5 · 28/01/2010 18:22

I have tried 9 different doubles and in my opinion you cant beat a mountain buggy but that obviously doesnt meet the facing requirement!! I know someone who has the first wheels who rates it highly, the only parent facer I have is an emmaljunga cerox 360 and an emmaljunga city cross....I love the fact that they face me but they dont have the versatility to offer 2 different seating positions. Non of these options are cheap but I do think its a bit of 'you get what you pay for' The emmaljungas are great quality as are MB and I have to disagree about the resale values, the emmaljungas and MBs resell really well with the last double MB to sell going for £225 and it was an old style one!! All in all Im afraid all doubles are a pain and there is no perfect solution

FreddoBaggyMac · 28/01/2010 19:45

Thanks everyone. I've had a couple of doubles myself and been less than happy with both, but I did sell them on ebay and get a reasonable amount for them. Will have a look at emmaljungas, I haven't heard of them before. I've had a look for the first wheels doubles on ebay and they seem to be going for only about £30 less than the new one I found - probably because they're quite newish I suppose.

I've been watching first wheels twins on ebay for a while and there have been a few absolute bargains especially if you don't need a carrycot. I am still kicking myself for missing out on one for 85 quid 5 miles up the road from me

FreddoBaggyMac · 29/01/2010 17:07

Oh that sounds good rightsaidfred - I'll keep watching!
