DD will be 2.7 when DS is born, do we need double buggy or not?

well thats about it really. i am of the opinion that she will still need a sit down and we will need somewhere to restrain her during public tantrums but dh, thinking of how ridiculously expensive a phil and teds set up is, is thinking of just a singleton pram and dd will ride on a buggy board. she is currently in a bog standard mclaren.

when dd was born we had a quinny buzz, unfortunately i have given the whole kit and caboodle (except the maxi cosi car seat) to my sister who is due just before me and is absolutely broke.

dh is not best pleased by my lavish gesture and tbh I hadnt really thought thorough how much travel systems cost, but hey, its done now

so what do you think?

tbh, you could probably get away with a sling for the first few months.

Don't think buggy boards fit very well on the Buzz anyway as the wheels are too far under the seat IYSWIM, so it may not have been that useful anyway

Have you checked out ebay for Phil&Teds or similar?

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 20/01/2010 15:08

oh, and you need to put the around each word like this--

bibbitybobbityhat · 20/01/2010 15:09

My dd was 2.8 when ds was born and we didn't get a double buggy. We managed with sling plus buggy for a few months then buggy plus buggyboard.

However, we have a car and so didn't have to walk miles with the buggy iyswim.

DD was quite happy on it for, say, half an hour at a time.

mistlethrush · 20/01/2010 15:10

Ds didn't really use his buggy at all from about 2.4, so I certainly wouldn't have needed it in your circs!

wilkos · 20/01/2010 15:24

thanks for your responses.

Pureasthecolddrivensnow - sadly the Buzz has gone to my sis

So, I suppose what we need to decide is whether to stick new ds in a sling and have dd in her mclaren as usual

OR

new pram and buggyboard

OR

Phil and Teds or similiar, and certain financial ruin

ps; dd is an unbelievable dawdler so she NEEDS wheeled transport to save me and dh from tearing our hair out

I have 22 months between mine and would have rather stuck pins in my eyes than expect DS to walk with us. But we are close to the town centre so do bits of shopping most days so I needed to be hands free and have space for shopping, a sling would have got in the way. We have a P&T, but TBH I bought it new and wish I had looked on e-bay first and saved a few quid. It will last us for ages, DS is only 3.2 now so he can walk if I'm not in a rush, but he can hop in the P&T when I need him to. I walk fast so will use a pushchair far longer than lots of people I think .

What about an NCT sale? I know I sold my P&T cocoon for £7 in their sale, its about £40 new IIRC. You might get a bargain.

wilkos · 20/01/2010 17:08

thanks meglet, will have to cosy up to the local nct again - have rather neglected them since dd turned into a toddler!

When DS1 was 2.6 we bought a buggy board that doubles up as a seat (litaf seat 2 go, from Tesco, don't know whether they still sell them). From that point on, DS must have ridden in the buggy maybe four times. The only thing with the seat is that there is no harness, kiddo has to hold on and DH managed to tip him off by going to fast over some cobbles.

YoMoJo · 20/01/2010 17:34

Are they a good walker & do you use your buggy a lot?

Would they behave in shops? (my 2.4 is horrendous so usually gets strapped in the buggy)

what time of the year will it be?
In winter i would say yes, so if you get caught out in bad weather they can huddle in the buggy but in the summer a buggy board would probably do.

I tend to use the double buggy when i need DS1 to have a nap or be kept "under control" but i also use single buggy a lot with ds2 in a sling (ive got a tie-on Napsack baby carrier from ebay.) Then i can easily swop around who sits in the buggy.

YoMoJo · 20/01/2010 17:39

2 of my friends have double maclarens & are pleased with them, I have a babyjogger city mini which i love (although a tad wide for squeezing between clothes rails in stores)

Both cost much less than P&T's!

ProfYaffle · 20/01/2010 17:47

dd1 was 2.9 when dd2 was born, we just had a buggy board, it was fine but dd1 was a good walker and well behaved in shops etc.

messygarden · 20/01/2010 17:53

I have a friend who has a one on top of the other buggy (might be a P&T) and she still uses it for her 4.4yo and 2.8yo. You could get a lot of use out of it and if you don't you could eBay it and get a very good price. I still put my 3.10yo in a buggy sometimes.

ChilloDOESNOTLIKELIARShippi · 20/01/2010 17:58

We sold DS's pushchair when he turned three as he hadn't used it for a couple of months. With that in mind, if I were you I wouldn't go to the expense of a double, but would get a buggy board.

nicolamumof3 · 20/01/2010 18:15

2.7yr olds vary hugely at how far they will walk. However i think you might struggle with a toddler that age in newborn set up for p&t.

When are you due? how long off is it?

get dd1 used to walking now try her on a board etc if friends have a buggy set up like that would they let you borrow? i spent hundreds going through all the different combinations when i had dc3 18m after dc2. We stopped using double when ds2 was 3.2m then used a board til he was 3.6 then he walked. And i mean alot of walking. We walk over a mile a day as i don't drive in all weathers. So it does depend what your lifestyle is like as well.

myeverything · 21/01/2010 02:53

i couldnt express how much i love my p&t! it all depends whether you go out alone alot/use buses... but i tried the sling + ds walking/in lightweight - it can get awfully hectic!
shop about for used ones or buy new and sell it on! they sell well on ebay

YoMoJo · 22/01/2010 16:30

oh yeah - lots of my friends toddlers scoot along on their scooters instead of using a buggy board.

momofnearly2 · 22/01/2010 18:18

Ds will be 18 months when this baby is born so he will be in a single pram and the baby in a sling for the first 6 months. Once he turns 2 he will be walking or in a Mei Tai on my back.

I can't comprehend spending all that money on a double when Ds won't even be in a buggy 6 months later!

hettie · 22/01/2010 19:37

mme well you could buy second hand and then sell on- I reckon you'd probably only 25-50 quid on a phil and teds this way......depends on how much you/dc walks...

colie · 24/01/2010 00:09

you also need to factor in the jealousy thing. Dd1 was 3.3 when Dd2 came along. I put Dd2 in her pram and attached a buggy board. Omg - Dd1 gave me the worse tantrum she had ever displayed. Demanding to go in the pram and screaming tht she had always got to go in the buggy. I remember it vividly it was in the middle of a busy shopping centre .

Didn't make the same mistake when Dd3 came along. Dd2 was 2.3 and I bought a cheap double buggy. Used it for about 2 months and then Dd2 was quite happy to go on the buggy board on Dd3's pram.

It can be a shock for the older child when the baby comes. If they are use to being in the buggy they might think the baby has stolen their ride so to speak.

Dc4 is due in June and I am thinking of a phil and teds or out and about nipper. Both are expensive even second hand on ebay but if it isn't too abused by my use I can sell it on for hopefully, a similar price. They seem to go for a good price on ebay.

Dd3 will be 2.5 when dc4 arrives. Had thought about the sling thing but not sure I woudl be confident enough or have enough time in the morning to get a baby in a sling and 3 others out the door for the school run!!
