Faulty Pushchair - charge for repair?

rosiefean · 17/12/2009 11:10

This is a sort of AIBU crossed with what are my consumer rights post...

My pushchair has had a screw shear off and therefore needs a repair. I bought it online and have contacted the company. They left a message this morning saying they need to return it to the manufacturers and there is a £15 charge. No explanation as to what that charge is (I haven't called back yet).

I bought it online on 30/06/09 but I only just discovered the fault. Is it legal for them to charge for repair? If it is, should I argue the toss with them anyway?

ION: it'll apparently take up to 3 weeks for the repair, so that's me without a pushchair until mid-Jan!

www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/ can help with your rights

How did you get on yesterday?
I think the charge might be for carriage. They would waive it if they had decent customer service.
You can't really demand a refund as you've had 6 months use out of it but they should repair it for nothing or replace if they can't fix it.
I think they can charge for transport though sadly

I had to pay to send my MB back for repair, the repair didn't work, they paid for the second trip and replaced the chassis in the end.
That was almost a year old. Zero problems with the second chassis, the first one was definitely duff.
Good luck...what brand is it btw?

Thanks for checking up, flightattendant. I spoke to them and they left the message about the charge in error! If their technician agrees that it's a manufacturing fault (which she said it sounded like it was) then I won't be charged. Otherwise I'd be charged £15 for the repair - which sounds pretty fair to me.

The pram is a Silver Cross (the grandparents offered to buy a "good" pram!) and I must admit I was expecting better build quality (the pram hood doesn't connect to the pram properly either - the poppers un-pop frequently. They're going to fix that too)

Oh hurrah, that sounds more like it

Surprised at SC though. They have always been pretty good ime, but you never can be sure!

I hope they fix it for you.

I never got a charged a bean when my SC had to go in for repair - and I bought it off ebay They are quite good. They gave my chassis a complete overhaul too and redid suspension and stuff.

Oooh, cool maxybrown! That bodes well!

I just called for an update today and it won't be ready for another 2-3 weeks... the retailer collected it from me on the Monday before Christmas but then SC didn't want it until the new year, so it's been sitting in a warehouse for two weeks. Normally I wouldn't be bothered 'cos he's usually in a sling, but I daren't take him out at the mo 'cos the paths are so icy still.

Have you had your repair yet ?
I had a problem recently with an SC pushchair which I have had for approx 18 mths. I rang their customer services not really expecting much due to the time I'd had the pushchair but they asked me to email photos and agreed straight away to repair it free of charge. They sent a courier and it was back to me in 3 days completely free.
I'm not easily impressed but they've really done themselves proud. The only issue was, as you mention, that they were closed over Christmas to I had to wait a week but it wasn't a problem as I didn't need it much over the holidays.

I've got half of it in a box in my living room! They fixed the screw issue but there was a smaller one with the pram cover (the bit that goes over his feet) not connecting properly to the pram itself. Apparently it will follow shortly.
