I too telephoned customer services and was told I would be sent a kit as a gesture of goodwill. I suggest that anyone concerned gets in touch with Maclaren to request that the kits be issued.
Maclaren has identified a risk and created a fix, therefore it should offer it to all its customers. I strongly feel that to do otherwise is utterly reprehensible.

Nearly 4 years ago part of my DD's finger was amputated in a Maclaren buggy. It was being erected at the time and DD knealt on the floor and 'hugged it'. It is the most horrific thing I have ever been through. DD now nearly 7 is very up-set by the fact her finger is different to everyone else she has ever seen. If anyone out there had a similar finger injury please I would love to hear from you
I did report it to Maclaren but now not sure they logged it properly and passed it to trading standards, Today I have contacted trading standards as I think it is important that someone monitors how prevailent the injury is. Mothercare sell plug clips and things for dorrs to prevent them shutting all the way. Why don't they sell clips to make buggies safer?

Hi,

I do a lot of work with Maclaren and they sponsored flexible working training for Mums through my Ten2Two organisation.

I asked them if I could come on and provide some info that might help you all and possibly clarify some points.

I don't weant to appear like the 'corporate suit' posting messages so let me know (members and Mumsnet) and if Ok, I'll post a few points that might be useful.

If not, no worries, sorry to disturb you!!

Tx, John (3 Girls, 10yrs, 8 yrs and 5 yrs)

Lasvegas · 12/11/2009 18:35

JohnOS I would be glad to hear what you have to say. Although nothing will ever restore my DD's finger, and I am long pased the age of using buggies.

JohnOS · 12/11/2009 19:08

OK,the most important basic info is that the customer services team will be sending out covers to customers.

If Mumsnet members want a set of covers (two for single buggies, three for doubles), you have to email name, address, buggy model (+twin or single) and year of purchase to [email protected]

You can also call the team on 01327 841320 and the people there can answer questions and help.

I'll post some other points tomorrow. The calls into the call centre mirrored many of the comments here, from concern to understanding and it woudl be good to hear more. thanks everyone. John

Do we need the serial numbers?

misdee · 12/11/2009 19:36

what about all other umbrella folding strollers which have the same sort of hinge?

domesticextremist · 13/11/2009 09:04

John - thanks for letting us know this - could you please explain exactly which hinge it is please?

Lou78 · 16/11/2009 15:18

In November 2007 my daughter climbed into her Maclaren Quest it had just been PUT UP but the hinge mechanism at the side had not properly clicked in and her little finger was caught resulting in the amputation of the tip. The incident happened in seconds and could have been avoided had covers been in place.
Buggies unlike doors of cars ect ect are specifically designed for very small children. Children at this age are just learning about the dangers in life and it is of course a parents responsibility to guide and monitor this process, eg dont touch hot things, dont put your fingers in doors ect, these are basic life lessons as any parent will know.
Buggies however are used, in some cases very frequently soley for very young children. In the same way that cots and highchairs are at this incredibley vulnerable time of life. It is our duty as evolving human beings to adjust these items to be as safe as possible for their primary users eg the children so that the possibility of injuring themselves with their use is minimal..... make the bars of a cot not such a width that a baby can get its head caught in it ect ect.
The use of an umbrella folding buggy aids millions of parents everyday and the solution of placing covers on the hinges is such a simple and effective one, one wonders why a huge company such as Maclaren does not make it a standard part of its manufacture?? They are excellent buggies otherwise. The issue has been raised and recognised, what makes me cross is that the covers are being issued to only those who ask, not as standard?? Why??
If you are considering buying a Maclaren or have one for goodness sake ask for the covers and ask for them to be made standard! Also European Health and Safety should be made aware and adjust there regulations so that it includes safety covers for hinges of ALL umbrella folding buggies. A problem has been identified and relatively easily solved why not just do it????
