Pushchair for 5 year old

Looking for some advice on someone in similar position.
my daughter is 5 and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. She’s doing really well but at times can be very fatigued so need a pushchair. I bought her an out and about when first diagnosed but she looks so cramped, it’s very low down and very bulky and heavy to be lifting in and out of the boot. I’m struggling mainly with hospital appointments. She’s tall and around 22kg so max weight for a lot of them. As it’s short distances I’m think weight limit won’t really matter 🙄 I just want one with a longer back rest. Thinking the bugaboo butterfly, it’s back rest is 68cm. Anyone any older children that require a buggy that could advise? My hubby is struggling with her diagnosis and will not agree to a special needs type pushchair.

thank you

No advice on the pushchair, but just wanted to send my best wishes for her treatment. It must be really tough for you all and I can’t imagine what you must be going through xxxx

The Special Tomato is a SEN pushchair but it doesn't look like one at all.
Look up Freedom for kids, they have a good selection and sorry to hear about your daughter.

My 6.5 year old 75th centile daughter had surgery and was unwell last year and fitted very well into our baby jogger gt, particularly when I took the hood off. A 7.5 year old relative also went in it at times going around legoland so that might be an option. I think it’s weight limit is 30kg.

Maclaren do push chairs for older children. We’ve used them for children in school and they are sturdy but look just like a normal pushchair

Tessiebeare · 17/05/2024 22:37

Looking at it the newer baby jogger GT2 has a lower weight limit of 22kg whereas the older version then babyjogger GT has a weight limit of 29.5kg but they are frequently on marketplace so might be worth a look.

So sorry to hear of your daughter’s diagnosis OP & Hope her treatment goes well.

We hired a City Jogger when we were on holiday. Thought our daughter was old enough to walk everywhere, but she struggled. Max weight is 22kg, but our daughter was heavier than that and the buggy coped fine. It felt spacious, sturdy and easy to steer and fold.

Bugaboo bee second or third hand. They are built well so second hand is fine. No sides and great suspension, also the seat and back extend. Used for my reception child who still needed a buggy due to CP and I’ve sat in it comfortably as a smallish adult. Also easy to fold and light to lift.

mitogoshi · 17/05/2024 22:49

You can buy what look like normal pushchairs but larger.

McLaren make one that looks like a normal buggy, just larger

Speak to wheelchair services at the hospital, my son was given a maclaren major. Quite basic but would do the job, if your looking for something similar to buy then the mobiquip xl is £125 on amazon. All others are very pricey

Nets281 · 17/05/2024 23:20

thank you all for your help, much appreciated! She is 1 year into her treatment and doing so well, just 10 months to go. It’s just got so much more difficult now she is bigger. I do the majority of hospital appointments on my own (hubby working) and it’s such a walk from the car park. I had looked for Mcclaren pushchairs as they had been recommended but it appears they don’t make them anymore. I’ve looked on eBay and honestly the ones for sale and deliverable to my area are quite badly worn. My hubby really has struggled from the very beginning and I can’t even begin to discuss the possibility of a special needs pushchair (absolutely no offence to those that use them whatsoever but I do have to take his feelings and wishes into consideration) but thank you to those that have suggested these. Also we don’t get help with purchasing them either. You either get a wheelchair or just purchase one yourself.
the city jogger was one I had looked at but was concerned about the footrest, looks quite small for her feet and she hates her legs hanging. I was avoiding bringing her into a shop to try these prams out to avoid having to explain the situation but probably would be better to avoid buying something again that’s unsuitable.
thank you all again for your suggestions I can ring ahead and check they have the ones I want to try out which will save a lot of hassle!

Glad to hear your DD is doing well with her treatment. I think the footrest on the baby jogger GT2 is smaller than the original GT because the footrest on the GT2 can lift up so their legs can go out but it doesn’t on the original GT. It might be worth looking on marketplace and trying one?

We used a mountain buggy urban jungle for DC with additional needs. We started using it when DC was eight as we were also reluctant to get a special needs pushchair. We looked mostly at all terrain/three wheelers as these tend to be bigger. We looked at the city mini (GT apparently has a slightly longer backrest!) but decided on the mountain buggy. I’ve seen people with their seven year olds apparently fitting in the butterfly. The mountain buggy wasnt as bad as I thought it would be to lift in/out of the boot, we probably used it over the weight limit and it held up fine, sits a bit higher than the out n about as well. DC sat under the hood fine until approx 140-145cm (though ours was an older one!)

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 18/05/2024 12:21

We have the mobiquip one for tall 6 year old. It is easy to put up nd down and manoeuvre around town. Not tried off road. It is umbrella fold and doesn't take up much width, but is longer than a pushchair for toddlers. I tend to put it along the rear footwell of the car, as my car boot is small. It has a footplate that is wide and can be attached at 3 different levels. It is the cheapest of the disability push chairs, ours is for sen reasons, so don't need lumbar support etc. I would definitely recommend.

Littlemisscapable · 18/05/2024 12:31

Our 6 year old was fine in a Phil and Ted for a while after surgery. Loads on Facebook. Good luck with it all.

HamBagelNoCheese · 18/05/2024 12:47

Are you happy to say what area you are @Nets281 (County will do!). I have a special tomato jogger that is looking for a new home - they are large though!
