Double pushchair for newborn and close to 3y/o?

Will I need a double pushchair for a newborn and a 2 y 9m year old? She is a decent walker thinking I might get away with one of those boards on the back of the babyzen yoyo? Or always have the baby in the sling? Am I being mad? Should I just get a double pushchair for my sanity’s sake?

You don’t need a double pushchair.

Toddler101 · 04/09/2023 21:21

Is your 2yo a runner?

Mine was 2.5 when baby arrived (now almost 5m and 2y10m) and we haven't needed a double buggy. We use a buggy board on the pram, or baby in sling 2yo on scooter. Works really well!

I had a newborn and just turned 2 year old.

Double pushchair was absolutely essential.

We still use it even though DC1 has just turned four. Little legs still get tired when walking a lot and it's such a massive help when you don't have to carry one of them and push a pram with your free hand. I wouldn't have survived going out alone with them both.

I recommend the baby jogger double.

You don’t need a double pushchair.

Do you know how much the OP needs to transport her kids?

Do they walk to 2 miles to nursery?
You must be psychic to know what the OP does and doesn't need.

OP I got an out n about double. Have a similar age range gap as you. My older one is now 3 yrs 6 months. He only needs it sometimes. So today walked 1.5 miles to swimming, had his lesson then walk 0.5 miles home but went in the buggy for the last mile.

Weather you need it depends on how far you would be expecting the child to walk or stay on a buggy board.

I think it depends on your 2 year old. I've got a 2 yr 8 month old and while she can walk well, she's going through a very long phase of going limp/demanding to be carried after 5 mins, so we've just bought a second hand icandy peach tandem pushchair on fb marketplace.

I'm hoping it'll last us until she's capable of walking normally for half an hour or so. At the moment, this pushchair will save my sanity as I don't see how I'd have been able to get out of the house safely otherwise, we don't have any walks near us that aren't along busy roads. Also it means I can do some longer walks with them both for the sake of my fitness levels!

ShineBright1209 · 04/09/2023 21:54

All depends on how well you daughter walks and how far you need to walk.
I’ve never used one and there was just under 2 years between my oldest 2 and then there was only 22 months between my youngest 2 and still didn’t use one.
Mine were quite good walkers though and I did use one of the wrist straps for them just for if they decided to try and make a run for it.

Headshoulderstoesknees · 04/09/2023 21:56

I got a double when dc 1 was 2 and dc2 was newborn we still use it now and they are 5 and 3 (both hyper mobile and autistic so it is def worth it !!)

InDubiousBattle · 04/09/2023 22:10

I had a smaller age gap (19months) and had a Phil & Ted's which we used for years. I paid £80 for it on Facebook and it was an absolute life saver on many occasions! I don't drive so we walked or got public transport everywhere. Do you drive?

MackenCheese · 04/09/2023 22:51

I second the Phil and Ted's buggy. I had a 16 month age gap.

WimpoleHat · 04/09/2023 22:53

You don’t need one - and you won’t use it for long. But mine was a lifesaver for 4 or so months when I was in a similar position. Have a look for an inexpensive one?

TaraRhu · 04/09/2023 22:55

I recommend a buggy board. Number 1 was 2 years 9 months when my daughter was born. We got a good 8 months use out of it before he walked or scooted anywhere. The only thing I would say is that they aren't suitable for really long walks. My son fell asleep on the buggy board a few times and fell off. They are also quite heavy. But yoyo zen is probably lighter.

WeWereInParis · 04/09/2023 23:12

How much walking do you do? And how much does she do already?

DD2 was born when DD1 was 2 years 10 months and we didn't have a double pushchair or a board. She's just walked since then. But we don't have a long journey to nursery (15 min walk maybe, but she was already doing that anyway), and at the weekends we tend to go out to places where she'd be running around anyway (woods, playgrounds etc) so wouldn't ever have taken a pram for her.

If you have to do a long walk to nursery, and she's used to being in the pram, it's probably more sensible.

luion · 05/09/2023 13:03

I had a Phil and Ted's, cheap secondhand on Ebay and same footprint as a single. I sometimes used the sling and a single, or scooter and single, 2 singles, or just a buggy and the older one walked. Depends on the journey length, what they were doing, if they still napped, if DH was with me, what else I needed to carry, what public transport options we had (no car). I would have been very limited on long, distant days out on my own without the double. If you only plan on doing short local trips or just going from car to playground then no need.

Totallyterrific · 05/09/2023 13:05

My two are also 2yr9mo apart. We never needed a double pushchair (even without a car). I sling carried the baby until 4 months old with eldest in pushchair (sharing with the baby if need be). From 4 months eldest rode on a buggy board with baby in the pushchair.

Viewfrommyhouse · 05/09/2023 13:09

Depends on how much you walk etc. I only have one child, but he regularly napped in the day until he was 4yo. So a double would've been essential for me. The mountain buggy duet would've been my choice in that case.

BarnacleBeasley · 05/09/2023 13:12

We will have a slightly smaller age gap (2.5 years) and have got a 2nd hand mountain buggy duet. It's the same width as the off-road single we normally use for DC1, smaller when folded, and not much heavier. I reckon if we have it, we'll use it - I've no doubt we could manage without, but this way we have options. Our toddler can and does walk - but progress is incredibly slow!

VivaVivaa · 05/09/2023 13:13

Depends how much walking you do and what your DD is like. Most things around us are max 20 minutes walk and the buggy board has been absolutely fine. Very glad we got it as DS is a resistant walker and not very good on his bike yet. When DC2 is asleep last thing I want to do is cajole DC1 along - much easier for him to just hop on the board as opposed to throwing a tantrum about walking. If you walk for miles and miles though you may need a double. If you don’t walk far and she’s a very keen walker you might be fine with nothing or just the sling.

hoophoophooray · 05/09/2023 13:15

I had exactly that age gap. Baby went in a sling everywhere until my eldest was about 3yr2m and then she walked and baby went in the buggy. I had a single Nipper 360 and never used a double

Essie274 · 10/10/2023 22:15

I decided not to get a double buggy when I had my second baby (2y3m age gap) as I carried baby in a sling for the first 3-4 months, and by that time I thought DS would be walking more. And he was, but there were still so many times that they both wanted to be in the pushchair that I ended up buying a double (out n about nipper double) when my children were very nearly 3 and 9mo. It's been 9 months now and I still use it everyday - I wish I had bought it from the beginning. DS(3.5yo) is a very capable walker, hikes miles at weekends, etc, but given that I don't drive and we use the bus/walk all the time (including home from full days at preschool), it has been so useful to have somewhere to contain then both when I need a minute (one of our favourite summer activities was to get baby to sleep in the pram and set up 3yo with some snacks and some music or audiobooks on his headphones while I took a walk alone with my thoughts. Blissful.
