Taking buggy abroad - hold/cabin

Need to take brand new (expensive) buggy on holiday. Is cabin approved and should be fine but airline has said there is a chance it will need to go in the hold.

Just wondered if anyone had any reassuring stories (or negative!) about their buggies being put in the hold.

Thank you!

I always put the buggy in the hold. On our first flight with dd the buggy was damaged and we had to make an insurance claim for a new one. It was covered by the airline but it was inconvenient,

All other times we have flown with the buggy in the hold it was absolutely fine.

If you’re very worried then you might want to consider getting a second hand buggy specifically for this holiday / future holidays. That way you don’t have to risk your expensive buggy being damaged. But the chances are your buggy will be fine.

Thanks so much. It's good to know you can claim on insurance, wasn't sure if that was a thing !

You can get protective bags for them.

I've never seen a buggy in the cabin before, unless it folds into hand luggage.

We always take into cabin. Babyzen yo-yo

I don’t know why it wouldn’t be allowed if it’s hand luggage size and you have paid for overhead hand luggage. We flew back last week with it as Ds hand luggage item. I just fold at gate, and into the small drawstring bag it comes with ( I did buy the rucksack bag for it but it was pointless as I have own rucksack on anyway).

I think it’s gone hand luggage on around 10 flights? Wouldn’t want in hold as then no pram on arrival. At Gatwick on arrival it was over an hour and half to walk from plane to security and wait in security line. All the babies and toddlers in arms were heavy and moaning as tired and bored. And no prams received until luggage carousel the other side of security. With the pram I could strap Ds in so he didn’t run away, and give him snacks and toys to entertain. Plus load all our stuff like coats and heavy water into pram basket to save arms

Thank you, this was my plan. It's a aer+ so folds up cabin size into its bag. And it will be allocated hand luggage (not a kids extra). When I contacted them they said it was the crews discretion whether it could go into the cabin or not. Hoping if it's in a bag on my shoulder they won't notice anyway!

Depends on who you are flying with and crucially how busy the plane is. I flew EasyJet recently and 3 people who were latish to arrive were told not to check luggage and to take on board - it was obvious why, only 1/3 full and they had decided to not bother checking hold luggage at some point,

Please check carefully - a number of policies cap the amount they will pay. I only know this because I have a disability and rollators are classed in the same group as buggies. When my rollator was damaged irreparably when it came out of the hold, they refused to pay the full amount because there was small print I hadn't noticed.

We’ve been lucky and never had any damage to a buggy in the hold but we have a double so taking on as hand luggage has never been an option. I’d probably pay for speedy boarding to ensure you get on before everyone else fills up the overhead lockers.

We always used to take the buggy as cabin baggage(baby zen yo yo) I bought a special bag for it which made it look like a normal backpack. Never had an issue, not even with Ryanair lol😀

WooWooWinnie · 24/05/2023 16:36

We’ve got the Cybex Libelle which folds up to fit in the overhead locker. We take it in the cabin.
